Principal News
The first days of Term 3 have seen many smiling faces around the school. It has been wonderful to see so many returning from the break looking relaxed, eager to be back and enjoying reconnecting with friends, parents and staff. The spirit of our community is easily recognised in the warm greetings of ‘welcome’ and the eager way that our children share their holiday stories with their friends and teachers.
Yesterday afternoon, our first assembly of the term provided an opportunity for our school community to gather. It was a time that we could meet and share in welcome, to start to think about the great learning and teaching experiences that are ahead of us, and it was also a time to reflect on some of the sporting achievements from last term. Also, we shared in the launch of our first ‘GA Colour Fun Run’, which is just one of the fantastic community events planned by our P&F this term. Detailed information around the Colour Fun Run is outlined further in the newsletter.
Today, I had the pleasure of taking a number of prospective families for a tour of our school during a ‘Principal’s Tour’. I look forward to these tours, as they provide one of the many celebrations for me as a Principal. As we visited the learning areas and many great spaces in our school, I reflected on the genuine witness of the many people in our community, who strive together to develop the minds and hearts of the students in our care.
The first weeks of the term promise to bring many activities and celebrations that will provide a depth of opportunities that add to the learning and teaching program for each student. I often consider that our school community is an extension of your family and is one that we can all be extremely proud of for being a positive, supportive and welcoming place. Working together means conversation that supports your child as we develop the same understandings about the important elements of helping them to grow and develop to be all that they can be.
Upcoming Commonwealth Census
This August our school is required to provide the Commonwealth Government both student and staff data as part of the annual census process. This data enables the government to determine our annual recurrent funding allocation. Student and staff names are not provided as part of this process. For your information, please find attached the Commonwealth Government’s privacy notice for your review and record.
Looking forward to another great term ahead.

Assistant Principal - Administration News
Good afternoon lovely families
Welcome back to a busy but wonderful Term 3. There is so much happening around school this term and it is such an exciting time to be here.
HEAR YE! HEAR YE! | ENCORE DANCE SUPERSTARS CONCERT PREP – YEAR 2 | THURDAY 21 JULY @ 2:00pm in the MC Shed
As promised, we are holding an ENCORE DANCE CONCERT performance for our Prep – Year 2 angels following some mishaps with timing last term. We had rescheduled of course, and then our beautiful Superstar Dance Teachers became sick themselves. We have worked super hard this week to secure a new date … and of course, we need to do this as quickly as we can so our little ones don’t forget their super moves.
This dance extravaganza will be held NEXT THURSDAY AFTERNOON (21 JULY) at 2:00pm in the MC Shed.
Our beautiful parents are of course, invited to join us to watch this most fabulous event. PLEASE BRING YOUR OWN CHAIR if you’d like to sit behind the students (facing forward). You will also be able to sit along the tiered green steps in the Shed … facing sideways to the dances.
Our beautiful friends from Superstars are going to have a run through with Prep-Year 2 before the encore concert time next Thursday (and after Dancing for Years 3-6). Again, we won’t have our hip hop teacher here with us to guide the boys, but our wonderful female teachers will stay and support our groovy male dance stars too.
Please arrive after 1:45pm to allow our students time to get through their Snack break, have rolls marked and students assembled.
Superstars Dance Years 3-6
Dance lessons began today for our students in Years 3-6. I just love watching their participation and involvement in these lessons as they prepare for the Dance Concert later this term.
The Superstars Dance Concert is scheduled for THURSDAY 1 SEPTEMBER (Week 8) commencing at 2:00pm in the MC Shed. Of course we would love to have as many parents/grandparents here as possible to cheer on our superstar dancers.
DROP OFF and PICK UP Zones
A gentle reminder that the school gates open and teacher supervision begins at 8:05am. Please do not drop your child/ren at a school gate or door and leave them unsupervised before this time under any circumstances other than, of course, when they are booked into OSHC. If one of your children is at school early for training, music etc your other child/ren cannot be left alone at this time.
It is so wonderful to see so many beautiful families utilising the drop off and pick up zones. I love witnessing how our little ones especially, become more independent as the year progresses; getting themselves in and out of their cars.
Thank you most genuinely to those people who use the zones so responsibly; following our processes and procedures that are put in place for the safety of all. I’d also like to extend my most sincere gratitude to the beautiful parents who come to help us in the mornings and afternoons. You make such a difference!
Just a few gentle reminders as I still see some practices that are unsafe and are not adherent to our processes.
It is important that if your child/ren is collected by family day care, a grandparent or someone outside of the family members reading this, that you remind those people of the appropriate ways to use the drop off and pick up zones.
When using the drop off and pick up zones, please:
- wait patiently in the line for your turn. Do NOT cut in front of other parents (around a corner) who have been waiting.
- keep your children IN THE CAR in the mornings BEFORE the gates open at 8:05am. We do not want students outside of cars, running up and down the footpath before a teacher arrives to supervise.
- encourage your child/ren to exit the car independently. I know that some cars have child locks and I understand this completely.
- DO NOT EXIT the vehicle as a driver (or passenger). No adult should be getting out of cars in a drop off or pick up zone.
- Keep the students’ bags in the car with them or in the front seat. No person should be accessing a car boot to get school bags. It’s dangerous to be in between vehicles.
- approach the zones as per the instructions provided in newsletters, on the parent portal and in the parent handbook. Please do not cut in around corners or perform U-turns in the street in front of the zone.
- always be mindful and respectful of our neighbours and the entries to their properties. Be sure that your car isn’t blocking driveways.
The drop off zones need to be efficient and fast moving, while maintaining everybody’s safety. Please encourage your child/ren to exit the vehicle quickly when it’s safe to do so.
The gates will close and be locked at 8:25am in the morning when the bell sounds to begin school. Any student arriving at school after this time must be escorted by a parent to the relevant office to be signed in.
In the afternoon, the gates will close at 3:20pm when supervision at the Pick Up Zones in the afternoon finishes. Any child left waiting after 3:20pm will be taken to the relevant office to await collection. If you are aware you will be later than 3:20pm, please phone the office and let us know. This way we can let the children know what is going on as sometimes they feel anxious if no one is there to collect them before 3:20pm. The children will be supervised in the office area/s until a parent arrives to collect them.
School Photos
By now you should have all received your school photo orders. As I flipped through the orders, it is always lovely to see their beautiful, smiling faces. If you have any queries or concerns, don’t hesitate to contact Silver Rose.
Curriculum Newsletters
The Year Level Curriculum Newsletters will be uploaded to the Parent Portal next Monday 18 July (Week 2). These newsletters provide a wonderful overview of the Teaching and Learning that will take place for your child/ren over this coming term. There are also some important date reminders, relevant for your child/ren.
While I understand how hectic life can become during a school term, I hope you are able to find some time to sit and read through the Curriculum Newsletters. It is a wonderful way to stay connected and informed.
School Colour Run
Yesterday at assembly we launched the School Fun Run (think ‘colour’ run) and the look on the students’ faces was just priceless. This is going to be so much fun (yes … I am excited too!)!!
The School Fun Run is a wonderful major fundraising initiative of our hardworking P&F will take place on Friday 26 August during school time. Be sure to keep up to date with all correspondence/communication. Please refer to the separate School Fun Run section in the newsletter to stay updated on this super duper event.
Blessings for the coming week

Lord, as we prepare for the coming of a new term, make us ready, attentive and available to hear you.
Thank You for the gift of being able to rise each day with the assurance that You walk through it with us.
Thank You for the gifts of creativity and uniqueness, and the energy to put them to good use.
May all that we are today, all that we try to do today, may all our encounters, reflections, even the frustrations and failings all be place in your hands.
May the work we do and the way we do it, bring new hope, new life, and courage to all we meet this term.
We thank you, Lord. Amen
Blessings for the week ahead,
Hannah Goodwin
From the Guidance Counsellor
Welcome to Term 3. I would like to provide an update from the Guidance Counsellor corner about the programs scheduled for Term 3.
Prep, Year 1, and Year 2
During Week 4, our Bravehearts’ personal safety education program will be returning to school and running the ‘Ditto’s Keep Safe Adventure Show’ for Prep, Year 1, and Year 2 students.
The Ditto show is a live, interactive 40-minute performance starring Bravehearts’ mascot ‘Ditto’. It includes song, dance, and easy-to-remember messages about personal safety. These songs and messages were written by Bravehearts’ professional educators and psychologists and are developmentally appropriate for your child’s age group. It provides students with personal safety tools and strategies while supporting positive self-esteem and resilience-building.
What your child will learn:
The show is underpinned by the following six principles of personal safety:
- Differentiating ‘yes’ and ‘no’ feelings.
- Recognising the bodies ‘warning signs’.
- Identifying ‘private parts’ and ‘privacy’.
- Helping children identify language and feelings associated with secrets.
- Reinforcing that there is no secret that children cannot tell someone.
- What to do if you feel unsafe or unsure.
Your child will learn these essential principles through songs such as ‘Run and Tell (someone you can trust)’ and ‘Private Parts (they belong to me)’. They will also learn ‘Ditto’s 3 Rules’, which are:
- We all have the right to feel safe with people.
- It’s ok to say NO if you feel unsafe or unsure.
- Nothing is so yucky that you can’t tell someone about it.
As part of the program, children are each given a Ditto’s Keep Safe Adventure Activity Booklet to take home. We encourage you to look at the booklet with your child, using the activities to help cement the personal safety messages from the show.
If you would like to learn more about how to talk to your child about personal safety, please download Bravehearts’ free ‘Personal Safety Parents and Carers Guide’ from the Bravehearts website: bravehearts.org.au/personalsafety.
Year 5/6
This term, I am running a program with Year 5/6 students from Weeks 3 to 10, called the URSTRONG program. The URSTRONG program is a series of 8 sessions designed to teach students how to develop healthy friendships and manage conflict in a respectful way. It provides students with a ‘language of friendship’ to strengthen their connection and open the lines for communication
More specifically, URSTRONG teaches students the difference between healthy and unhealthy friendships and how to put out common friendship fires. We also look at strategies when someone is mean on purpose and the cycle of a healthy friendship cycle. The sessions are made up of reflection questions, scenarios, explicit friendship skills instructions, and opportunities to apply friendship strategies to real life experiences.
The framework and methodology aligns with a Positive Education and proactive approach, providing students with the skills, language, and confidence to develop healthier friendships. I will also provide some updates and tips for parents along the way.
If you have any queries about either of the programs or would like any further information, please do not hesitate to contact me.
Kind regards,
Renae Haggitt

Drop off and pick up zone volunteers
Thank you to those parents who have already so generously volunteered their time in the pick up zones. We truly appreciate your help.
We would love parent helpers at both campuses from Term 3. Pick up zones operate from 8:00am – 8:25am in the morning and from 2:55pm – 3:20pm in the afternoons. It's an easy 25 mins, opening car doors, helping little people in and out of cars.
If you can spare 20-30 minutes once or twice a week please email Jenny Druce at jdruce@bne.catholic.edu.au with your preferred day, time and campus.
If I have nominated you for a shift, and it’s not suitable, please let me know.
A friendly reminder, before commencing your role as a volunteer or other personnel at our school, you are required to complete the online volunteer training. The training can be found here: https://www.bne.catholic.edu.au/students-parents/student-protection/Pages/Student-Protection-and-Code-of-Conduct-Training-for-Volunteers-and-Other-Personnel.aspx

Health and Wellbeing at GA
Update COVID-19 (14 July 2022): Change to Isolation Protocols for Cleared Cases in Queensland
We are all mindful of monitoring the COVID-19 health and flu situation that is impacting our communities. I am grateful for the support and co-operation of our school community in acting on the guidelines of our governing authorities. In working together to minimise the risks, we are doing all that we can to support the health and safety of all in our communities.
The Queensland Government has announced an update to COVID-19 isolation protocols. The change relates to people who have had COVID-19 and are considered ‘cleared cases’. We are currently experiencing high levels of COVID-19 and the flu across our communities. I invite all to read the following information carefully, so you are fully informed about protocols in our school environment.
- Up to now, people who have had COVID-19 and have been cleared after testing negative, did not need to isolate or get tested if they had COVID-19 symptoms in the 12-week period after contracting COVID-19.
- This has now changed. New health advice (from the Australian Health Protection Principal Committee, AHPPC) is that reinfections may occur as early as 28 days after contracting COVID-19. Based on this new advice, Queensland Health has announced that the ‘cleared case’ period will be reduced from 12 weeks (3 months) to 28 days (4 weeks).
This means that anyone previously infected with COVID-19 will need to get tested and isolate if they have symptoms or return a positive test from four weeks after their initial infection.
Please keep your child at home if they are experiencing any COVID-19, cold or flu-like symptoms, however mild. If we contact you because your child is unwell, please collect your child as soon as possible. This will help us to reduce the risk of spreading infections in our school.
Thank you for your support and understanding in these challenging times.
Second-hand Uniform Shop
The second hand uniform shop will be open on the first Monday of the month with the next open day on Monday 1 August.
The shop will open between 7:30am and 8:10am on the GA campus. Each item is $5. Cash only sales.
A friendly reminder regarding the process for purchasing from the second hand shop:
- only parent volunteers, managing the second hand sales, are allowed in the storeroom
- second hand items are washed and bagged according to size so that finding stock is quick and easy
- due to the demand in short opening hours please take the item as given to you by our parent volunteers. It is not possible to sift through stock; if it is unsuitable it can be returned to the Mount Carmel School Office for a refund or exchange
- the shop has a small float on the day but the exact change is appreciated.
Demand for second hand uniform items is usually high so our parent volunteers truly appreciate your kindness and patience as they help as many parents as possible when the shop is open.
Need items outside of shop open times? Please email pwynnum@bne.catholic.edu.au with what you need and one of our amazing parent volunteers will fill this order for you.
