Principal News
This week, we celebrate Catholic Education Week (CEW). The theme for this year reminds us of our call to nurture ‘communities of faith, hope and love’, being ever mindful of God’s active participation in our lives.
Today, our school community gathered in prayer for a beautiful CEW liturgy. This time to gather in prayer as a faith community provided an opportunity to celebrate and acknowledge the long tradition of Catholic education. Thank you to Father Thomas, Mrs Hannah Goodwin (APRE), Miss Nicole Dodds and our Year 2 Blue students for leading our liturgy.
The theme of this year’s celebration is beautifully shared in the CEW reflection below, as Pope Francis invites us all to reflect on hope:
I invite everyone to renewed hope, for hope “speaks to us of something deeply rooted in every human heart, independently of our circumstances and historical conditioning. Hope speaks to us of a thirst, an aspiration, a longing for a life of fulfillment, a desire to achieve great things, things that fill our heart and lift our spirit to lofty realities like truth, goodness and beauty, justice and love…Hope is bold; it can look beyond personal convenience, the petty securities and compensations which limit our horizon, and it can open us up to grand ideals that make life more beautiful and worthwhile”. Let us continue, then, to advance along the paths of hope.
Blessings for the week ahead

Good afternoon lovely families
Who’s excited about Pyjama Day??? I am!!!
Thank you so much to all the parents, grandparents and friends who were able to join us for the Encore Dance Performance from our littlest angels (Prep – Year 2) last Thursday afternoon. They never fail to delight us!! Even after several weeks and no rehearsal during that time, our students were so gorgeous! I’d like to extend a special thank you our friends at SUPERSTARS dancing, Miss Laura and Miss Leah, who worked so hard to make this little concert happen. It was the best way to finish our day!
Superstars Dancing Years 3-6
Dance lessons have begun for our superstar dancers in Years 3-6. Dance lessons are scheduled every Thursday for most of Term 3.
Be sure to pop the Years 3-6 Dance Concert in your diary and hopefully many of you will be able to join us for this grand event, and cheer on our superstar dancers. The Superstars Dance Concert is scheduled for Thursday 1 September (Week 8) commencing at 2:00pm in the MC Shed.
Drop Off and Pick Up Zones
Our students are so responsible when they are arriving at school through the Drop Off Zones and while they are waiting in the Pick Up Zones in the afternoons. We couldn’t run these zones (especially the GA Zone) without the help of our fabulous parent helpers. I’d just like to acknowledge and say THANK YOU to every parent who helps us either in the mornings or the afternoons. You make such a huge difference and we appreciate you so much.
It's never too late to join the fun!!! If you can spare 20 minutes in the morning (from 8:05) or in the afternoon (from 3:00pm) please phone Jen in the MC Office and pop your name on our roster. We would love to have you with us.
There are still a small number of drivers who are not using the zones appropriately. It is imperative that all who utilise this drop off and pick up service, follow the rules. It ensures the safety of our precious kids and shows respect to those who are utilising the zones correctly.
GA Drop Off and Pick Up
Please do NOT cut the corner around Pine Street into the zone in Akonna Street. This is dangerous and does not respect those parents/carers who are waiting patiently in the zone along Akonna Street. Please enter the zone from further down Akonna Street (Cedar Street) as previously outlined in all correspondence.
U-turns should NOT be performed in the middle of the zone in Akonna Street. Please approach the zone from Cedar Street as requested.
MC Drop Off and Pick Up
Please remain mindful and respectful towards the residents along Pine Street. Cars should not be blocking driveways and impeding a resident’s ability to enter or leave their own home.
May I also respectfully remind parents that the GA Church Car Park and Chestnut Street (outside MC Office) are NOT a pick up or drop off zones. These areas should not be treated as a stop, drop and go under any circumstances and we will not allow students to wander alone into the car park or wait alone outside the MC Office/Gate. We have designated drop off and pick up zones to ensure student safety. Certainly parents can park in the Church Car Park and walk to meet their child/ren, but the students should not be hopping into cars that are randomly (or double) parked in either of these areas. Your support in this matter would be most appreciated.
Swimming Lessons for Years 1 and 2
Swimming lessons for all students in Years 1 and 2 will begin in Term 4 Week 2 and run every Friday for 7 weeks (Friday 14 October – Friday 25 November). These lessons will take place at Manly Pool. The students will be transported via bus to and from their swimming lessons. More information will be provided as Term 4 draws closer.
I would like to include a couple of date claimers and reminders just to be sure parents are aware of events that are coming up:
- Angels on the Oval (GA P&F Community Event): Sunday 21 August
- School Colour Run (GA P&F Fundraising Event): Friday 26 August
- Years 3-6 Dance Concert: Thursday 1 September @ 2:00pm in the MC Shed
- Book Week Assembly and Character Parade: Friday 9 September 8:45am in MC Shed
Many blessings to you all for a wonderful week

Prayer for Catholic Education Week
Loving God,
We thank you for our Catholic school communities throughout Australia.
We pray that we may walk ‘the way of the gospel’ together, as we accompany each other in our learning this year.
May the Holy Spirit guide us and give us new eyes, new ears and open hearts, helping us to bring your love to all we encounter.
We ask this prayer through Jesus our Lord and teacher, who lives and reigns forever and ever.
Amen.
Blessings for the week ahead,
Hannah Goodwin
From the Library
It will be a busy term in the library with our Book Week celebrations occurring in Week 9. The theme for this year is ‘Dreaming with your eyes open’. I love this theme as books do have the power to inspire and encourage greatness as we are introduced to new worlds and intriguing characters. Book Week is designed around the CBCA Book awards and our students will be introduced to and celebrate the short-listed books in their library lessons. As always, we also have whole school events planned.
- A Book Fair will run from Wednesday 7 September until Tuesday 13 September. The students will create a wish list in their library lesson and we welcome you to visit the library to purchase some great books for your home library.
- Meerkat Productions will be performing for the students during school hours on Wednesday 7 September.
- Both the Book Week Assembly presented by 5/6 Red and the book character parade will be happening on Friday 9 September starting at 8:45am.
I would like to thank you in advance for your support of these events which aim to bring joy to reading.

Sports Aerobics
"Chookas" to our Sports Aerobics Teams who are competing this weekend at The 2022 FISAF Australia Sport Aerobics & Fitness State Championships. We can't wait to hear how you go!
Did you know..."chookas" is an Australian expression to wish a performer good luck. This dates back to the 1900s, when a full house meant that the cast would be given a whole roast chicken, which was rare and expensive in those days, to eat after the show. Before the show started, someone would count how many people were in the audience. The counter would yell 'Chook it is!' or 'Chookas', if it looked like the theatre was full, to let the cast know they wouldn't go hungry. So 'chookas' came to mean 'good luck'.
Sport Aerobics Performance
Please join us after drop off on Wednesday 3 August for an exciting performance opportunity by the Guardian Angels’ Sports Aerobics teams. Led by one of the Industrie1 coaches, each of our teams will perform their routines in front of the whole school at a special assembly in the MC Shed together with an announcement of all competition results and achievements.
Wednesday 3 August - 8:45am – MC Shed – all welcome

Drop off and pick up zone volunteers
Can't volunteer for a regular shift but might be able to do a one off in pick up zone? One of our regular volunteers is not available for the morning shift on GA campus on the dates below. If you can help please contact Jenny Druce in the School Office
1 August | 8 August | 15 August
Thank you to those parents who have already so generously volunteered their time in the pick up zones. We truly appreciate your help.
We would love parent helpers at both campuses from Term 3. Pick up zones operate from 8:00am – 8:25am in the morning and from 2:55pm – 3:20pm in the afternoons. It's an easy 25 mins, opening car doors, helping little people in and out of cars.
If you can spare 20-30 minutes once or twice a week please email Jenny Druce at jdruce@bne.catholic.edu.au with your preferred day, time and campus.
If I have nominated you for a shift, and it’s not suitable, please let me know.
A friendly reminder, before commencing your role as a volunteer or other personnel at our school, you are required to complete the online volunteer training. The training can be found here: https://www.bne.catholic.edu.au/students-parents/student-protection/Pages/Student-Protection-and-Code-of-Conduct-Training-for-Volunteers-and-Other-Personnel.aspx
You will need to download, print and complete your registration form, which is contained within your online training. Return it to the School Office prior to commencing your role.
Health and Wellbeing at GA
Wearing of Face Masks: Encouraged but not Compulsory
Advice from BCE outlines that it supports the Queensland Government and the Queensland Premier’s recommendation that face masks should be worn indoors where possible, and where social distancing is not possible. However, the decision to wear a face mask should remain a personal one.
This means that while it is encouraged that our students, our staff, and visitors to our school can choose to wear a face mask - it is not compulsory.
Please note that primary school children have never been required to wear a mask when at school. As with the above scenarios it is completely up to parents as to whether they would like their child to wear a mask.
A reminder about other face mask requirements
I would also take this opportunity to remind our school community that the requirements to wear a face mask for 7 days after having COVID-19, or when a close contact are still in place, as well as ongoing public health requirements to wear a face mask when travelling on public transport (including in taxis and ride-shares).
Change to Isolation Protocols for Cleared Cases in Queensland
Up until now, people who have had COVID-19 and have been cleared after testing negative, did not need to isolate or get tested if they had COVID-19 symptoms in the 12- week period after contracting COVID-19.
This has now changed. New health advice (from the Australian Health Protection Principal Committee, AHPPC) is that reinfections may occur as early as 28 days after contracting COVID-19. Based on this new advice, Queensland Health has announced that the ‘cleared case’ period will be reduced from 12 weeks (3 months) to 28 days (4 weeks).
This means that anyone previously infected with COVID-19 will need to get tested and isolate if they have symptoms or return a positive test from four weeks after their initial infection.
COVID safe measures:
Regular COVID-safe measures will continue to be implemented at Guardian Angels to reduce the risk of transmission:
- Stay home when sick and get tested if exhibiting COVID-19 symptoms.
- If you test positive, follow Queensland Health requirements.
- If you are a close contact of a person with COVID-19 follow the Queensland Health advice.
- Practise good hygiene – including regular hand washing, use of hand sanitiser, wearing face masks as advice directs.
- Maintain social distancing of 1.5 m.
- Consider wearing a mask as adviced by Qld Health when indoors and/or when social distancing is not possible.
- All events/activities and excursions/incursions must comply with COVID safe practices.
Please keep your child at home if they are experiencing any COVID-19, cold or flu-like symptoms, however mild. If we contact you because your child is unwell, please collect your child as soon as possible. This will help us to reduce the risk of spreading infections in our school.
Thank you for your support and understanding in these continued challenging times.
Second-hand Uniform Shop
The second hand uniform shop will be open on the first Monday of the month with the next open day on Monday 1 August.
The shop will open between 7:30am and 8:10am on the GA campus. Each item is $5. Cash only sales.
A friendly reminder regarding the process for purchasing from the second hand shop:
- only parent volunteers, managing the second hand sales, are allowed in the storeroom
- second hand items are washed and bagged according to size so that finding stock is quick and easy
- due to the demand in short opening hours please take the item as given to you by our parent volunteers. It is not possible to sift through stock; if it is unsuitable it can be returned to the Mount Carmel School Office for a refund or exchange
- the shop has a small float on the day but the exact change is appreciated.
Demand for second hand uniform items is usually high so our parent volunteers truly appreciate your kindness and patience as they help as many parents as possible when the shop is open.
Need items outside of shop open times? Please email pwynnum@bne.catholic.edu.au with what you need and one of our amazing parent volunteers will fill this order for you.
