Angels on the Oval
On Sunday 21 August, we welcomed our ‘Angels on the Oval’ event back to Guardian Angels'. Warm temperatures and an almost cloudless blue sky provided the perfect conditions for the 2022 event, as attendees flocked to our Mount Carmel Campus to enjoy the day. Spirits were high as all enjoyed the entertainment from the live band, performances from our GA choir and sports aerobics teams, and Bayside Dance performances. The market stalls, food trucks, sausage sizzle, choc toss and ‘Gladiators’ kids zone all added to making this a great day.
Many thanks are due. Thanks to our dedicated P&F Committee, the supportive Guardian Angels’ staff, generous volunteers, wonderful sponsors and supportive parish, but thank YOU, our families and visitors, for attending, and supporting the day. We appreciate every person for their contribution.

Sleep Routines
There are three more busy weeks remaining in Term 3 with several events to look forward to: Father’s Day, the 3-6 Superstars Dance Concert, GA Book Week festivities, an excursion for our Year 5/6 students and the special celebration for those students preparing to receive First Holy Communion. And of course, there is the highly anticipated Colour Run tomorrow. This is in addition to all the learning that happens in the classroom and extracurricular activities.
It is normal, as we end Week 7, for students to start showing signs of tiredness. The school upholds the same expectations of behaviour, personal appearance and responsibility throughout the entire term.
It is important that students are getting 9-11 hours sleep each night. Setting up a bedtime routine encourages good sleep habits:
- Stick to a regular bedtime
- Encourage older children to set a bedtime that allows for the full hours of sleep needed at their age. A bedtime routine could include washing up and brushing teeth, reading a book, or listening to quiet music.
- Busy children need some time to relax. Turn off all screens (TV, computers, phones, tablets, and video games) at least 1 hour before bedtime. Consider removing all devices from your child’s bedroom.
- Reading or listening to soft music is a good activity before going to sleep.
Rested children are happier, are more likely to manage their emotions and concentrate in class. We want every student to wring out every ounce of opportunity in classroom learning and participate and enjoy all the school activities still ahead in Term 3.
Blessings for the week ahead

Good luck to our Opti-MINDS Teams!
Over the past 6 weeks a group of 26 students have been working with myself and Mrs Waller as part of the Opti-MINDS competition. Opti-MINDS is a competition where students can showcase their creative talents by working on a solution to a challenge posed by the Opti-MINDS directors.
This year we have four teams attending the Regional Finals at the University of Queensland on Sunday. The teams will present their solutions and complete a spontaneous challenge in front of a panel of judges. They have worked incredibly hard and we wish them the best of luck for Sunday.
Premier’s Reading Challenge
Wow! This year we have had an incredible number of students complete the Premier’s Reading Challenge. To complete the challenge:
- Children in P-Y2 had to read 20 books (these books could also be books that were shared with them)
- Children in Y3-6 had to read 15 books
The reading window closes tomorrow. If you have not already returned your form to school please do so as soon as possible. Reading data is entered into the PRC platform which closes next Friday. Forms received after this date will unfortunately not be able to be counted towards the challenge.
Keep an eye out for next week’s newsletter update for a list of winning classes and individual prize winners! Our school target was to have 100% of children complete the challenge. Let’s see how close we can get!

Guardian Angels' Colour Run

And the winner is...
... you'll have to wait and see ...
The highest fundraising class will be running the Colour Run course first and we'll announce it tomorrow before the race commences.
A friendly reminder, if you haven't already done so, to please action the parent slip, sent by email on Monday for your child's participation in tomorrow's Colour Run.
From the Library

The fun of Book Week is almost upon us. We have been busy in the library creating displays and exploring the shortlisted books to excite our learners. The library has been busy during lunchtimes with various craft activities that align with the theme of ‘dreaming with your eyes open’. We are very much looking forward to celebrating books and reading with you all during our book week events.
We will welcome Meerkat Productions to Guardian Angels' to perform during school hours on Wednesday 7 September.
The Book Week Assembly will be presented by 5/6 Red on Friday 9 September starting at 8:45am. This will be followed by the book character parade. The students are so excited to share their favourite characters with their friends and teachers.
Book Fair is coming to Guardian Angels’ on Wednesday 7 to Tuesday 13 September. Parents and students may come to the library to purchase books during this time, with both cash and card facilities available.
The Book Fair is open to parents during the following hours:
- Wednesday 7 September | 3:00pm-4:00pm
- Thursday 8 September | 8:00am-8:25am and 3:00pm-4:00pm
- Friday 9 September | 8:00am-8:25am and 3:00pm-4:00pm
- Monday 12 September | 8:00am-8:25am and 3:00pm-4:00pm
- Tuesday 13 September | 8:00am-8:25am
Students will each fill out a wish list to take home. Parents are able to pay for these items online if they are unable to come to Book Fair. Once paid, the receipt number will need to be transcribed onto the wish list. The student will then need to return to the library with the wish list to collect the books.
We look forward to seeing you at the Book Fair and thank you in advance for supporting Guardian Angels’ Library.

Drop off and pick up zone volunteers

Thank you to those parents who have already so generously volunteered their time in the pick up zones. We truly appreciate your help.
We would love parent helpers at both campuses from Term 3. Pick up zones operate from 8:00am – 8:25am in the morning and from 2:55pm – 3:20pm in the afternoons. It's an easy 25 mins, opening car doors, helping little people in and out of cars.
If you can spare 20-30 minutes once or twice a week please email Jenny Druce at jdruce@bne.catholic.edu.au with your preferred day, time and campus.
If I have nominated you for a shift, and it’s not suitable, please let me know.
A friendly reminder, before commencing your role as a volunteer or other personnel at our school, you are required to complete the online volunteer training. The training can be found here: https://www.bne.catholic.edu.au/students-parents/student-protection/Pages/Student-Protection-and-Code-of-Conduct-Training-for-Volunteers-and-Other-Personnel.aspx
You will need to download, print and complete your registration form, which is contained within your online training. Return it to the School Office prior to commencing your role.
Health and Wellbeing at GA
Wearing of Face Masks: Encouraged but not Compulsory
Advice from BCE outlines that it supports the Queensland Government and the Queensland Premier’s recommendation that face masks should be worn indoors where possible, and where social distancing is not possible. However, the decision to wear a face mask should remain a personal one.
This means that while it is encouraged that our students, our staff, and visitors to our school can choose to wear a face mask - it is not compulsory.
Please note that primary school children have never been required to wear a mask when at school. As with the above scenarios it is completely up to parents as to whether they would like their child to wear a mask.
A reminder about other face mask requirements
I would also take this opportunity to remind our school community that the requirements to wear a face mask for 7 days after having COVID-19, or when a close contact are still in place, as well as ongoing public health requirements to wear a face mask when travelling on public transport (including in taxis and ride-shares).
Change to Isolation Protocols for Cleared Cases in Queensland
Up until now, people who have had COVID-19 and have been cleared after testing negative, did not need to isolate or get tested if they had COVID-19 symptoms in the 12- week period after contracting COVID-19.
This has now changed. New health advice (from the Australian Health Protection Principal Committee, AHPPC) is that reinfections may occur as early as 28 days after contracting COVID-19. Based on this new advice, Queensland Health has announced that the ‘cleared case’ period will be reduced from 12 weeks (3 months) to 28 days (4 weeks).
This means that anyone previously infected with COVID-19 will need to get tested and isolate if they have symptoms or return a positive test from four weeks after their initial infection.
COVID safe measures:
Regular COVID-safe measures will continue to be implemented at Guardian Angels to reduce the risk of transmission:
- Stay home when sick and get tested if exhibiting COVID-19 symptoms.
- If you test positive, follow Queensland Health requirements.
- If you are a close contact of a person with COVID-19 follow the Queensland Health advice.
- Practise good hygiene – including regular hand washing, use of hand sanitiser, wearing face masks as advice directs.
- Maintain social distancing of 1.5 m.
- Consider wearing a mask as adviced by Qld Health when indoors and/or when social distancing is not possible.
- All events/activities and excursions/incursions must comply with COVID safe practices.
Please keep your child at home if they are experiencing any COVID-19, cold or flu-like symptoms, however mild. If we contact you because your child is unwell, please collect your child as soon as possible. This will help us to reduce the risk of spreading infections in our school.
Thank you for your support and understanding in these continued challenging times.
Second-hand Uniform Shop
The second hand uniform shop will be open on the first Monday of the month with the next open day on Monday 5 September.
The shop will open between 7:45am and 8:20am on the GA campus. Each item is $5. Cash only sales.
A friendly reminder regarding the process for purchasing from the second hand shop:
- only parent volunteers, managing the second hand sales, are allowed in the storeroom
- second hand items are washed and bagged according to size so that finding stock is quick and easy
- due to the demand in short opening hours please take the item as given to you by our parent volunteers. It is not possible to sift through stock; if it is unsuitable it can be returned to the Mount Carmel School Office for a refund or exchange
- the shop has a small float on the day but the exact change is appreciated.
Demand for second hand uniform items is usually high so our parent volunteers truly appreciate your kindness and patience as they help as many parents as possible when the shop is open.
Need items outside of shop open times? Please email pwynnum@bne.catholic.edu.au with what you need and one of our amazing parent volunteers will fill this order for you.

Altruistic August - Day 25

Ordering items from the Tuckshop
As noted in the Parent Handbook, we explicitly teach children not to share, swap, give away or take other students’ food to prevent any issues related to allergies. When ordering from the Tuckshop please order only for your child and not extra items for class mates. We appreciate your support with this matter.
