Term 3 | Week 8 - School News
Happy Father’s Day
I was reading an article by well-known parenting editor, Michael Grose. This article outlines research highlighting that children need to develop confidence, character and resilience to support them to thrive in a contemporary society.
As parents, we know that to develop these qualities requires them to be purposefully nurtured through the words and actions that we model. It is a great article, but it reminds me that parenting isn’t easy; that it has incredible challenges, as well as amazing joys and rewards.
As parents, so much of what we teach our children is often inspired by our parents or those who have had a similar role in our lives. As we celebrate Father’s Day this Sunday, it is a time for us to reflect on those who have influenced who we are.
Pope Francis holds up the inspiring model of St. Joseph, patron saint of fathers, workers, and the universal Church, to all fathers. Pope Francis reminds us of St Joseph’s humility, selflessness, courage and love that he showed to Mary and Jesus:
“We think of St Joseph as a carpenter of Nazareth who taught the young Jesus his trade and the value of work. In this role, he served as a model for all fathers as he watched over Jesus and quietly imparted to Him that wisdom that helped Him grow on a human level, in his understanding and appreciation of his unique relationship to His heavenly Father. Just as St. Joseph was close to Jesus, you too must be guardians.” (Pope Francis)
Pope Francis expressed the importance of being close to your children and in this closeness to walk with them. As parents, he reminds us that we are the guardians of our children on their journey of growth, grace and wisdom. He reminded us that above all, your child needs you, your presence, your closeness, your love.
God took the strength of a mountain, the majesty of a tree, the warmth of a summer sun, the calm of a quiet sea.
The generous soul of nature, the comforting arm of night, the wisdom of the ages, the power of the eagles flight.
The joy of a morning in spring, the faith of a mustard seed, the patience of eternity, the depth of a family need.
Then God combined these qualities, with nothing more to add.
His masterpiece was complete, whom He called….DAD. (Anonymous)
May God bless all our Father’s and special people in our lives as we celebrate Father’s Day this Sunday.
A big thank you to the many parent helpers who have organised the Father's Day stall this year; from sourcing and selecting gifts, to setting up and running the stall for our students and families... THANK YOU
Blessings for the week ahead

Please keep your child at home if they are experiencing any COVID-19, cold or flu-like symptoms, however mild. If we contact you because your child is unwell, please collect your child as soon as possible. This will help us to reduce the risk of spreading infections in our school.
Thank you for your support and understanding in these challenging times.

National Child Protection Week which occurs during Week 9 (4-10 September) is an important time to consider how we all play a part in creating a safe and supportive community for our children. This year, the theme is 'Every Child in Every Community Needs a Fair Go'.
Key Messages:
- Child protection is everyone’s business. The responsibility lies with adults in keeping children safe from harm. All members of society need to play a part in ensuring children are nurtured and safe.
- Adults are essential in ensuring children’s safety and well-being.
- Listening to children and young people is the number one indicator in assisting their safety and well-being.
Children are safest when they are listened to, respected, and believed. All adults can play a part by ‘tuning in’ to children in everyday situations about small worries; then they are much more likely to feel comfortable telling us if something big is wrong. Some ideas for talking with children about safety include:
- Supporting children to identify trusted adults (both within the family and outside) who they can talk to if they are worried, upset, or don’t feel safe.
- Reminding children that they can talk to a trusted adult about anything, no matter how big or small their worry might be.
- Talking to children about how they know when they feel safe or unsafe. Help them to listen to their early warning signs (how their body feels), and to trust their feelings and instincts.
- Being open to talking about all kinds of feelings, including anger, joy, frustration, fear and anxiety. This helps children to develop a ‘feelings vocabulary’.
If you’re looking for activities to do with your children, the National Association for the Protection of Child Abuse and Neglect (NAPCAN) has launched a great Children’s Activity Pack*. Working through the pack is a great way for you to start a conversation with your child about what makes them feels safe and supported where they live.
* You can download the activity pack via the link above or it is also attached to this newsletter.

Renae Haggitt
OptiMINDS
On Sunday, a group of 24 students were accompanied by their parents to the University of Queensland to take part in the annual Opti-MINDS Challenge. Over the course of 6 weeks, the groups had to design a solution to a given challenge. They worked together at lunch time and after school, collaborating on ideas, designing costumes and props and writing scripts and books.
The four Guardian Angels' teams were an absolute credit to themselves and the school. They conducted themselves in such a way that the judges commented on how prepared they were and how confident in their responses they were.
All four teams achieved amazing results and we are super proud of their efforts:
Language and Literature 1 – Participation Award
Language and Literature 2 – Participation Award
Social Sciences 1 – Honours Award
Social Sciences 2 – FIRST PLACE
The winning Social Sciences team will now have the opportunity to return to UQ to participate in the State Finals in October. We wish them the very best of luck.
Kind regards
Elizabeth Morrissey
Sports Aerobics at Nationals!
Sending "aim high and fly" wishes to our Sports Aerobics Teams who are competing this weekend at FISAF Australia National Championships. We can't wait to hear how you go!
Athletics Wrap Up 2022
The last 10 weeks have seen Guardian Angels’ students learn, develop skills, and compete in Athletics. All students across the school did themselves proud participating with energy and true sportsmanship at the House Athletics Carnival at Iona. In what was a competitive field, Katara took home the House Athletics Trophy for 2022. From this event the following students were crowned Age Champions:
- 8Yr Girls Brielle B
- 8Yr Boys Quentin Mc and Rocky B
- 9Yr Girls Memphis W
- 9Yr Boys Conan C
- 10Yr Girls Christina V
- 10Yr Boys Thomas D
- 11Yr Girls Lilly T and Ella C
- 11/12Yr Boys Alberto P
- 12Yr Girls Lily B
A huge congratulations to these students!
From the school carnival, a team of 49 students aged from 9-12yrs were selected to represent Guardian Angels’ at the Bayside Catholic Schools Athletic Carnival. All students proudly represented the school and had a fun day.
The following 11 students were also selected from the Guardian Angels’ House Athletics Carnival, based on performance and benchmark cut off times/distances to try out at the Lytton District Trials:
- Lily B
- Alberto P
- Braith J
- Lilly T
- Ella C
- Rooni P
- Isabella B
- Christina V
- Thomas D
- Lachlan T
- Mason G
All of these students represented themselves and Guardian Angels’ School superbly. The following students performed so well they made the Metropolitan East Trials:
- Christina V for 1500 and 800m events. Christina finished 4th for the 1500m and 9th for the 800m event, just missing out on representing Metropolitan East for 1500m by 1 place. An amazing effort and she is already back in training raring to try out again next year.
- Lilly T for Long Jump. Lilly jumped a magnificent 3.85m and finished up 8th in her category. I have a feeling 2023 will see her jumping again.
- Thomas D for High Jump. Being such a high achieving sportsman Thomas has missed a few days of school this year and chose to not compete at this event as this is not his main sport. A tough decision, but I’m sure he will face a few more in the future with his sporting talents. Well done for getting this far.
A huge congratulations to all of our students for their Athletics efforts in 2022!
Guardian Angels' Colour Run
One Yellow couldn't be beat in the fundraising up to Colour Run running first through the course last Friday.
What a great day we all had at the School Fun Run! Congratulations to all our students, parents and teachers who got out there and made our day such a blast!
It’s an exciting time as we now get to focus on the prizes you’ve worked so hard to achieve.
We are still fundraising until the 2 September 2022, so please keep fundraising. If you have already hit your fundraising target, why not increase it and either get a better prize, or a 2nd prize?
After 2 September you will be able to log on to your profile page at schoolfunrun.com.au to order your prize.
PLEASE NOTE: If you have selected a ‘Goal’ prize, this will not be ordered for you – you still need to log on to order your prize.
Nude Food Day - 6 September
This term Year 6 students have decided to hold some NUDE FOOD days. We have seen the amount of rubbish in the school and have decided we must ACT!! Nude Food Day’s aim is to reduce the amount of rubbish, in particular plastic, in our school. Things like containers and paper bags, to hold your food, are what we want to encourage. Snacks like chips and crackers in plastic bags can be taken out and put into paper bags and your sandwich can go in a container rather than plastic wrap. Prizes will be handed out to the class with the least amount of plastic, with the best NUDE FOOD lunch boxes. Hopefully this small change can help to reduce the amount of rubbish in our school.
Dates for the NUDE FOOD lunches this term are: Tuesday 6 September
Winners will be announced on 7 September!

Drop off and pick up zone volunteers
Thank you to those parents who have already so generously volunteered their time in the pick up zones. We truly appreciate your help.
We would love parent helpers at both campuses in Term 3. Pick up zones operate from 8:00am – 8:25am in the morning and from 2:55pm – 3:20pm in the afternoons. It's an easy 25 mins, opening car doors, helping little people in and out of cars.
If you can spare 20-30 minutes once or twice a week please email Jenny Druce at jdruce@bne.catholic.edu.au with your preferred day, time and campus.
If I have nominated you for a shift, and it’s not suitable, please let me know.
A friendly reminder, before commencing your role as a volunteer or other personnel at our school, you are required to complete the online volunteer training. The training can be found here: https://www.bne.catholic.edu.au/students-parents/student-protection/Pages/Student-Protection-and-Code-of-Conduct-Training-for-Volunteers-and-Other-Personnel.aspx
You will need to download, print and complete your registration form, which is contained within your online training. Return it to the School Office prior to commencing your role.
Second-hand Uniform Shop
The second hand uniform shop is open on the first Monday of the month with the next open day on Monday 5 September.
The shop will open between 7:45am and 8:20am on the GA campus. Each item is $5. Cash only sales.
A friendly reminder regarding the process for purchasing from the second hand shop:
- only parent volunteers, managing the second hand sales, are allowed in the storeroom
- second hand items are washed and bagged according to size so that finding stock is quick and easy
- due to the demand in short opening hours please take the item as given to you by our parent volunteers. It is not possible to sift through stock; if it is unsuitable it can be returned to the Mount Carmel School Office for a refund or exchange
- the shop has a small float on the day but the exact change is appreciated.
Demand for second hand uniform items is usually high so our parent volunteers truly appreciate your kindness and patience as they help as many parents as possible when the shop is open.
Need items outside of shop open times? Please email pwynnum@bne.catholic.edu.au with what you need and one of our amazing parent volunteers will fill this order for you.
