Term 4 | Week 3 - School News
Welcome 2023 Prep Students to their First Prep Orientation Session
Tuesday was the first of our Prep Orientation sessions for Term 4 with this visit forming a part of our transition program for our 2023 Prep students. We welcomed many new families to our school community, and a number of returning families, as younger siblings of current students prepare to begin their formal educational journey at Guardian Angels’.
At Guardian Angels’, we include a variety of opportunities to support incoming Preps, to transition to our school. The orientation activities are valued by our families and are well supported. This visit aims to provide the students with their first experience of the school setting. Students had the opportunity to share in activities in the learning areas, meet some of their classmates for 2023, and to become familiar with the general space.
I trust that our 2023 Prep parents enjoyed having an opportunity to meet other GA families. I know that our team certainly enjoyed having the opportunity to meet with everyone and to welcome all to our school community.
Thank you to our Liz Morrissey and Jenny Druce for coordinating the session with our team, and to our Prep team for your care and creativity in planning such a wonderful morning of activities for our 2023 Preppies. The smiles and exciting stories shared by the children with their parents on returning to the GA sails after the session was heart-warming to see, and we are looking forward to the next orientation session on Tuesday 1 November 2022.
Staffing Arrangements: Update Primary Learning Leader (PLL) at GA
As you are aware, Liz Morrisey has been appointed to the role of Acting APRE at our school for the remainder of the 2022 school year. Liz is currently our school’s Primary Learning Leader (PLL). In consultation with Anne McKenny, an Acting PLL will not be appointed at our school for Weeks 3–9 of this term. This decision is to support a continuity of learning for our students, and to minimise the impact of staffing changes on learning and teaching.
We have worked to identify priorities and reallocate key responsibilities of the PLL role to individual leadership team member portfolios. In addition, Dawn Morrissey will be facilitating timetabled in class support and providing additional focused support. Dawn is well known to our GA community, and we are grateful for her generous support.
Blessings for the week ahead
Veronica Tomerini-Smith
Please keep your child at home if they are experiencing any COVID-19, cold or flu-like symptoms, however mild. If we contact you because your child is unwell, please collect your child as soon as possible. This will help us to reduce the risk of spreading infections in our school.
Thank you for your support and understanding in these challenging times.
Assistant Principal - Religious Education
Firstly, may I take this opportunity to thank everyone for their kind words and best wishes as I take on the Acting APRE role for the next 7 weeks.
Catholic Mission Week
Next week Guardian Angels will take part in Socktober, an initiative of global mission aid agency Catholic Mission, that raises awareness and funds for critical projects supporting vulnerable children in developing countries.
On Thursday 27 October, students will have the opportunity to wear ‘crazy socks’ to school in exchange for a gold coin donation. The focus of the learning and fundraising efforts that the students will carry out, is a farming project in rural Ethiopia, where families grapple with the issues of food insecurity and malnutrition. We strive to teach the students at GA that their generosity can make a really big change to the lives of those less fortunate. As a way to show our gratitude and give thanks we will be led in prayer by our Year 5/6 students at 8:45am in the Shed. Everyone is welcome to attend this prayer celebration.
Lord, teach me to be generous;
Teach me to serve you as you deserve,
To give and not to count the cost,
To fight and not to heed the wounds,
To toil and not to seek for rest,
To labour and not to seek reward,
Except that of knowing that I do your will.
Amen.
Blessings for the week ahead,
Liz Morrissey
Good Luck at Opti-MINDs!
This weekend Mrs Waller and Mrs Morrissey will be accompanying one of our Opti-MINDS teams to the State Finals.
Since the Regional Finals in Term 3, the team have been working on an idea that showcases ‘a future world they would like to see’. Maria T, Henry B, Georgia S, Rooni P and Sofia P were all passionate about seeing animals being able to live in their natural environments, living in harmony with humans rather than competing with humans for space and resources. They will be showcasing their idea on Saturday before taking part in a 3 hour challenge and other activities on the Sunday.
It will be a big weekend for the team and we wish them the best of luck.
Student Success - write4fun
Congratulations to the following students for their recent success in the Unleashed 2022 Schools Poetry & Short Story write4fun Competition. These students placed in the top 5% and 8% of entries and have the opportunity to have their stories published in the 2022 write4fun anthology and on the write4fun website.
Max Z - Year 1 Green
Madeleine C - Year 3 Green
Caitlin S - Year 3 Blue
Tess Dowden - Year 5/6 Red
Nude Food Day - every Tuesday in October
Year 6 students are running NUDE FOOD days each Tuesday in October. We have seen the amount of rubbish in the school and have decided we must ACT!! Nude Food Day’s aim is to reduce the amount of rubbish, in particular plastic, in our school. Things like containers and paper bags, to hold your food, are what we want to encourage. Snacks like chips and crackers in plastic bags can be taken out and put into paper bags and your sandwich can go in a container rather than plastic wrap. Hopefully this small change can help to reduce the amount of rubbish in our school.
This term's winners so far:
Week 2 - 4 Red
Week 3 - 2 Blue
Winners will be announced at assembly!
Bento Boxes - Year 5/6
To mark the end of another successful year in Japanese, the students in Years 5/6, will celebrate with an Obento - a special kind of Japanese lunch that is not only tasty, but also very healthy!
This year students will have two choices. The full list of ingredients is included below. Please discuss with your child which box they would like in preparation for our Japanese class on Monday 31 October when we will place our orders.
Bento boxes will be distributed in Week 7 on Monday 14 November at snack time.
Open to all students in Years 5/6. An email, including the order form, will also be sent to all Year 5/6 families.

Drop off and pick up zone volunteers
Thank you to those parents who have already so generously volunteered their time in the pick up zones. We truly appreciate your help.
We would love parent helpers at both campuses in Term 3. Pick up zones operate from 8:00am – 8:25am in the morning and from 2:55pm – 3:20pm in the afternoons. It's an easy 25 mins, opening car doors, helping little people in and out of cars.
If you can spare 20-30 minutes once or twice a week please email Jenny Druce at jdruce@bne.catholic.edu.au with your preferred day, time and campus.
If I have nominated you for a shift, and it’s not suitable, please let me know.
A friendly reminder, before commencing your role as a volunteer or other personnel at our school, you are required to complete the online volunteer training. The training can be found here: https://www.bne.catholic.edu.au/students-parents/student-protection/Pages/Student-Protection-and-Code-of-Conduct-Training-for-Volunteers-and-Other-Personnel.aspx
You will need to download, print and complete your registration form, which is contained within your online training. Return it to the School Office prior to commencing your role.
Second-hand Uniform Shop
The second hand uniform shop is open on the first Monday of the month with the next open day on Monday 10 November.
The shop will open between 7:45am and 8:20am on the GA campus. Each item is $5. Cash only sales.
Need items outside of shop open times? Please email pwynnum@bne.catholic.edu.au with what you need and one of our amazing parent volunteers will fill this order for you.
Random Acts of Kindness - Tag! You're It!
We loved this "pay it forward" idea by the RAK Foundation.
Wanna make someone's day?
Do a kind act for them anonymously and leave one of these cards to 'tag' them to pass on the kindness. You'll be the start of a ripple of kindness that has no end.
