Term 4 | Week 7 - School News
Bandanna Day
Guardian Angels’ was a sea of colour on Tuesday as children wore their bandannas to school. All proceeds from the Bandanna sales go directly to Canteen, a charity that raises money for children living with cancer. Thank you to everyone who was able to support Canteen, together we helped raise a massive $2,100. What an amazing effort!
Year 5 and Year 6 Formation Days
Tomorrow we welcome members of the Brisbane Catholic Education Student Formation team who will be working with our Year 5 and 6 students. The Year 6 students will reflect on how they have used the Gifts of the Holy Spirit and the impact they have had as leaders in their final year at Guardian Angels’. They will then look to the future as they transition to high school. The focus for the Year 5 students will be how they can use the Gifts of the Holy Spirit in their leadership roles next year. The day promises to be one of great reflection and formation for the students.
Joy Barker
At the end of the 2022 school year, Joy Barker will be retiring and ending her 26 year association with Guardian Angels’ School. I extend sincere thanks to Joy for her commitment and dedication to our school community. During her time at Guardian Angels', Joy has worked as a School Officer, and most recently has also provided support in the role of Relief Administration.
Joy has made a unique and valued contribution to the Guardian Angels’ Community. She is a warm presence in our school, and her kind smile and gentle ways will be greatly missed. Joy has been dedicated to working in partnership with staff, parents and parish to make a real difference in the lives of our students. Joy has greatly contributed to the spirit of community that is enjoyed at our school.
On behalf of the staff, parents, student, and parishioners of Guardian Angels, we thank Joy for the genuine care and thoughtfulness that she has shown for our community over many years and thank God for gifting us with her.
There will be times for our community to offer thanks and farewell to Joy in the coming weeks.
We pray that her retirement will bring her time to do all the things that she loves, and we wish her every blessing for the future.
Important COVID19 Update (11 Nov 2022): Change to Traffic Light Response to COVID
From Friday 11 November, the Queensland Government and our Chief Health Officer announced that Queensland has entered its fourth wave of COVID-19. There has consequently been a change in the traffic light system guiding the state’s COVID-19 response, from green to amber.
Amber (Tier 1) means there are moderate rates of community transmission. When the traffic light is amber, you should follow the advice for the green traffic light, and:
- wear a mask
- in healthcare settings
- indoors, if you can't socially distance
- on public transport
- if you are older or medically at risk
- if you're around people who are vulnerable to COVID-19
- take a rapid test (RAT) every 2 days if someone in your household has COVID-19.
People who are older or have medical conditions can be more vulnerable to serious illness if they get COVID-19.
The Chief Health Officer urged all Queenslanders to stay at home if they are sick, to undertake RAT testing and record positive results with Queensland Health and for close contact household members to monitor for symptoms and undertake RAT testing.
More information from Queensland Health can be accessed here: https://www.qld.gov.au/ health/conditions/health-alerts/coronavirus-covid-19/health-advice/traffic-light-advice
Please keep your child at home if they are experiencing any COVID-19, cold or flu-like symptoms, however mild. If we contact you because your child is unwell, please collect your child as soon as possible. This will help us to reduce the risk of spreading infections in our school.
Thank you for your support and understanding in these challenging times.
School Fees
All school fees for 2022 have been issued and were due for payment by 1 November. Thank you to those families who have already made payments or who have arrangements in place.
If you have not paid your school fees, we ask that you do so as soon as possible. If you require another copy of your statement, please request by emailing pwynfinance@bne.catholic.edu.au.
Our preferred method of payment is by BPAY using the reference details on your statement OR via Online Payment: https://www.bpoint.com.au/payments/guardianangelsschoolwynnum?BillerCode=1747880
We can also accept payments by EFTPOS via the School Office.
If you would like to set up direct debit arrangement please contact me at pwynfinance@bne.catholic.edu.au.
For those families experiencing short or long-term genuine inability to pay fees, we are committed to
providing support to ensure that enrolment is not compromised. Please contact us to discuss further.
Drop off/Pick Up - important safety concerns
At Guardian Angels’ we are very strategic in our decisions regarding the safeguarding of our students. To support this, we provide two areas for pick up and drop off (Pine Street and Akonna Street). There are very explicit procedures that we ask for our families to follow to ensure the safe drop off and collection of our students. These expectations are frequently communicated throughout the year.
Unfortunately, there are still a number of people who are not following these procedures and there are some practices that are potentially endangering our students. In addition, we must respect our neighbours who live around our beautiful school.
The major concerns that are evident at this time include:
- Drivers cutting around the corner from Pine Street into the Akonna Street Drop off/Pick Up Zone (GA Campus). Drivers are asked to enter this zone from Cedar Street, travelling along Akonna Street (crossing Pine Street). There are often several cars waiting in line when some drivers cut the corner and jump this queue.
- Drivers executing U-turns in the actual Drop Off/Pick Up Zones. This is quite dangerous, and we respectfully ask that it not occur.
- Drivers parking across driveways along Pine Street whilst waiting to approach the Pine Street Zone (MC Campus). Please be respectful to our neighbours who should always have free access to their driveways and homes.
Chestnut Street practices are a major concern.
- Chestnut Street is NOT a drop off area for students on the MC Campus.
- Drivers are continually double parking and allowing students to exit or enter vehicles. We will not allow students to wait for parents at the Chestnut Street entrance to Mt Carmel Campus.
- Please do not ask your child/ren to enter or exit the school this way unless your car is legally parked and a parent/carer has walked in to collect the student/s.
- If you are running late for school (after 8:25am) it is a requirement that students are NOT dropped to walk into the office area alone. Parents must walk the student into the office and have them signed in as a late arrival please.
- Some drivers are using the driveway entrance to the High Point unit block in Chestnut Street as either a turning circle or parking across the driveway to walk students into school. These practices must cease immediately as it is potentially dangerous for the residents of that unit block. It is imperative that we show respect for our neighbours by not parking, stopping or turning in or across their driveway entrances.
The same safe parking practices apply for parents accessing the OSHC service. Parents should be safely parking to walk in and/or collect their child from the service
Your support in this is very important. It is vital that we continue to work together in partnership so that our beautiful students are safe and happy, and that continue to operate side by side with our neighbours who reside around our school.

Drop off and pick up zone volunteers
Thank you to those parents who have already so generously volunteered their time in the pick up zones. We truly appreciate your help.
We would love parent helpers at both campuses in Term 3. Pick up zones operate from 8:00am – 8:25am in the morning and from 2:55pm – 3:20pm in the afternoons. It's an easy 25 mins, opening car doors, helping little people in and out of cars.
If you can spare 20-30 minutes once or twice a week please email Jenny Druce at jdruce@bne.catholic.edu.au with your preferred day, time and campus.
If I have nominated you for a shift, and it’s not suitable, please let me know.
A friendly reminder, before commencing your role as a volunteer or other personnel at our school, you are required to complete the online volunteer training. The training can be found here: https://www.bne.catholic.edu.au/students-parents/student-protection/Pages/Student-Protection-and-Code-of-Conduct-Training-for-Volunteers-and-Other-Personnel.aspx
You will need to download, print and complete your registration form, which is contained within your online training. Return it to the School Office prior to commencing your role.
Second-hand Uniform Shop
The second hand uniform shop is open on the first Monday of the month with the next open day on Monday 6 February.
The shop will open between 7:45am and 8:20am on the GA campus. Each item is $5. Cash only sales.

Come and join us to celebrate the end of an awesome year at Guardian Angels' School. Due to the large numbers at previous events the event will be split into two sessions by Year Group:
Prep - Year 2 - 4.30pm to 5.45pm
Year 3 - Year 6 - 6:00pm to 7.30pm
The aim of the two sessions is to have more manageable numbers in the shed, and to ensure there is enough space on the dance floor to get dancing, and enough smiling time in the photo booth. We understand that some families have multiple children across the year groups and you are welcome to attend both sessions.
Please RSVP so we can adequately cater for the event, and also to pre-book your Meal Deal and any additional sausages. Additional sausages, soft drinks, wine and beer will be available on the night. Please bring cash to purchase these.
Please note in the comments section any dietary requirements.
The Guardian Angels' Church/Parish car park will be unavailable on the night due to Parish events.
Volunteer opportunities for "End of Year Disco – Friday 25 November" are now open.
