Parent OLi Boot Camp Sessions (Years 3 – 6)
Detailed communication about our School’s OLi program (One-to-One Learning iPad) was emailed to parents of students from years 3 – 6 on Friday 27 January 2023.
Parent boot camp sessions have been scheduled during Week 4. Parent/s are required to attend one of these OLi boot camp sessions at the commencement of the program, each year. This is to ensure that you are aware of the rights, roles and responsibilities of the school, student, and parent within our one-to-one iPad program.
For 2023, parent sessions are as below:
**Registration for Parent ‘boot camp’ is required via the RSVP link by Thursday 9 February 2023
Parent Partnership Sessions
Over the past week, I have had the opportunity to attend our annual Parent Information Sessions for each year level. I extend thanks to you all for your attendance and taking such an active part in your child’s education.
Each year level session provided valuable information around the general routines for your child’s learning area, as well as overviews of the learning and teaching programs for each term, for the 2023 school year. You are always welcome to ‘check in’ with the curriculum focus of your child’s learning throughout the year, via the classroom displays in each learning space, or by speaking with the class teacher. Our teaching teams have worked extensively to create frameworks around teaching and learning practices, focusing on literacy, that are consistent from Prep – Year 6. These were shared during the sessions, are evident in the visuals of the learning spaces, and have been fundamental in supporting a deep level of engagement in learning for each child; from the very first days of the school year.
Additional information around communication, special events, homework, class timetables, literacy and numeracy routines, as well as our school wide approach to behaviour learning and building a positive environment for our students was also shared.
It was wonderful to see so many parents taking the opportunity to attend and to meet their child’s teacher/s for 2023.
Thank you to our committed and professional staff for their efforts to prepare and showcase the wonderful learning and teaching that will be provided to the students in their care this year. If you weren’t able to attend the parent sessions offered, I encourage you to contact your child’s home group teacher to identify the key information shared.
I look forward to our continued partnership in the year ahead which will support each child to learn, progress and reach their full potential.
Kind regards
Veronica Tomerini-Smith
Assistant Principal - Administration
Good afternoon lovely families …
It has been just so lovely to share the Parent Partnership Evenings with you all. I may have mentioned to a couple of beautiful mums on our way out one night that I really love Parent Partnership Evenings, because dinner is always cooked for me when I get home … ha ha .. of course I was only joking as I do. It really is just such a fabulous time to see you all and connect with our beautiful families, learn about the incredible teaching and learning that our teachers have planned for our students and hear about whole school information that makes our school the most wonderful place to be. Thank you so much for spending this time with us. I hope it further confirms how important the partnerships are between home and school.
Last year, in the lead up to Christmas, our three beautiful prep classes entered a competition where they decorated some Gingerbread people. This was a community competition and there were many wonderful entries from schools across our area. Some of you may have been lucky enough to see all of these fabulous creations when they were displayed at Wynnum Plaza. All three of our entries were just incredible and two of them earned a prize. Guardian Angels received two gift cards valued at $150 and $100.
We made the decision to deliver the gift card prizes to the current Year 1 classes as these were the students who had worked so hard on the Gingerbread entries last year (Prep 2022). Our wonderful Year 1 teachers will collaboratively decide how to spend the gift card prizes so that the students can enjoy their success.
Drop Off and Pick Up Zone Information
I realise that I dedicated quite a sizeable component of my previous newsletter to the routines of Drop Off and Pick Up. We now have a large number of families who are accessing this drop off and pick up service and it is really wonderful to see the vast majority of people who are following the processes and procedures properly to minimise risk to our beautiful students.
Over the past three weeks however, I have witnessed a number of practices from a significant number of drivers that are in direct contradiction to the processes that must be followed when using these zones. I would just like to remind all of our drop off and pick up zone users of some processes that are not always being followed appropriately.
- Drivers are to remain in their cars at all times in these zones. I have witnessed a number of parents, usually of small children, who are getting out of their cars in the zone to assist their child, help do up their seat belt etc. It is of utmost importance that all drivers remain in their cars. We have a teacher in the GA Pick Up Zone (and often some wonderful volunteers) to help our little ones into their cars. If they cannot do up their seat belt by themselves however, parents may need to park their car and walk in to collect their child; waiting to use the Pick Up Zone once your little one can do up their seat belt.
- Please approach the drop off and pick up zones from the correct areas. Akonna Street (GA Campus), please approach the zone from Cedar Street ONLY; NOT from Pine Street. Cutting in means that you push in front of other drivers who are waiting in the queue. This has happened a number of times over the past few weeks and is very frustrating for any drivers who are waiting to enter the zone from the appropriate place. Even if you are entering the zone at a later time, please ensure you are following the procedures and entering from Cedar Street rather than coming around the corner at Pine Street. Pine Street (MC Campus, please approach the zone from Tingal Road
- The church car park IS NOT a drop off/pick up area. Please DO NOT ask your children to get out of your vehicle or enter the vehicle in a drop off mode. You are so welcome to PARK your car in the car park and walk to get your child/ren however stopping your car so that the student/s can just hop in or out, is not acceptable. This is a very dangerous practice and I have personally witnessed many close calls in the car park over the years. Please do not do this. If we see students waiting to get into a vehicle in this manner, we will always redirect them to the GA Pick Up Zone.
- Similarly, Chestnut Street (outside or near the MC Office) is also NOT a drop off or pick up area. We will always redirect students to the MC Pick Up Zone if we see them waiting here. Some drivers have been double parking and letting students out to walk in to school. Please don’t do this from this area.
- Please do not park in the Parish/School carpark (behind the MC admin building) in Chestnut Street. This carpark is for parish and school staff use only.
Of course we will always have a kind word to any driver we see who may not have followed the processes and procedures of our Drop Off and Pick Up Zones. We absolutely need your support in this area to ensure our little angels are kept safe and sound. It is also very important that you let any other person who may use the zones eg grandparents, day carers etc so that they are aware of the expectations of use in these areas.
Many thanks for your kind understanding in this important matter. And don’t forget … I would LOVE to have you volunteer for 20-30 minutes mornings or afternoons in the GA Drop Off and Pick Up Zones. Let Jenny know (MC Office) if you are able to help out.
Blessings of peace to you all for the coming week

Good afternoon families
This week our Year 5 and 6 Leaders participated in Servant Leadership formation session. The children spent time reflecting on what it means to be a leader and how they can be a leader within our school community. The students spent time reflecting through the Gospel, in connection with our Franciscan Charism. The students created a symbol of their leadership and wrote a personal leadership commitment for 2023.
We marked this special time for our Year 6 Leaders with a Commissioning Ceremony. Students were asked to be servant leaders and to make a commitment to leading our school community. Our Year 6 leaders were then invited to confirm their commitment as leaders of our community by declaring the following:
As Year 6 leaders at Guardian Angels’ in 2023, we will endeavour to let our words teach and our actions speak. We will lead by upholding our school’s Gospel values as students of faith we will:
- aim high and fly
- follow Jesus’ way and lead by example
- include others and show respect
- act safely and make positive choices.
May we strive to be the best we can be, to fulfil our school motto “To Achieve Life”.
We also announced our School House Captains and Choir and Band Captains for 2023.
Congratulations to following students:
Project Compassion
Next week at assembly we will be launching our Project Compassion Appeal for 2023. We will be sharing information about how we can support this wonderful cause. This year the theme is “For all Future Generations”. The Project Compassion appeal helps to raise money and awareness for less fortunate people throughout our world. It helps them to gain access to education, something which they may not have received previously, which in turn helps them to create an income for their own families and communities. Each week students will hear a story of how people in our world, who are fighting the odds are when graced with the kindness of people like you, extraordinary things can happen.
The Transformation Power of Lent
We would like to warmly invite you to attend session in the gathering area at the back of the Church on Tuesday 28 February at 2:30pm – 3:00pm. The focus of the session will be on the Season of Lent. We will share how as a school we will journey through Lent and we will also spend time reflecting on your own personal journey through the Season. Please come and join us as we celebrate the wonder of God’s relationship with you in Jesus Christ.
Important Dates:
- Wednesday 15 February – Project Compassion Launch Assembly – Shed – 1:50pm
- Tuesday 21 February – Shrove Tuesday

Drop off and pick up zone volunteers
We would love parent helpers in pick up zones this year. Pick up zones operate from 8:00am – 8:25am in the morning and from 2:55pm – 3:20pm in the afternoons. It's an easy 25 mins, opening car doors, helping little people in and out of cars.
If you can spare 20-30 minutes once or twice a week please email Jenny Druce at jdruce@bne.catholic.edu.au with your preferred day, time and campus.
I have had a few parents contact me about shifts and I will update the roster and publish in next Thursday's bulletin. If I have nominated you for a shift, and it’s not suitable, please let me know.
A friendly reminder, before commencing your role as a volunteer or other personnel at our school, you are required to complete the online volunteer training. This training needs to be renewed annually and can be found here: https://www.bne.catholic.edu.au/students-parents/student-protection/Pages/Student-Protection-and-Code-of-Conduct-Training-for-Volunteers-and-Other-Personnel.aspx
You will need to download, print and complete your registration form, which is contained within your online training. Return it to the School Office prior to commencing your role.
Please keep your child at home if they are experiencing any COVID-19, cold or flu-like symptoms, however mild. If we contact you because your child is unwell, please collect your child as soon as possible. This will help us to reduce the risk of spreading infections in our school.
Thank you for your support and understanding in these continued challenging times.
