‘Our communities are to be the salt of the earth and the light of the world’ - (Mt5:13-16)
One of the seven challenges from Pope Francis is to ‘not allow ourselves to be robbed of community! (#92). He invites us to share in the joy of the Gospel through seeking out face-to-face encounters with others; remembering that Jesus is present in the close and continuous interactions that we have with those in our communities, as we engage in service with and for others (Joy of the Gospel, Pope Francis).
His message is simple, that in our communities we must ‘learn to find Jesus in the faces of others, in their voices, and in their pleas’ (#88). Helping out fosters relationships that are personally rewarding as we support one another (Joy of the Gospel, Pope Francis).
Often, it is the simple things that really make a difference in the everyday of our school life. Things like working as volunteer to support an event, attending a P&F meeting, helping with classroom activities or an excursion, encouraging your child to participate in a weekend mass, doing a job at a carnival or school event, helping to set up tents for shade for our students and so much more.
When our students see their parents volunteering or they themselves have an opportunity to participate, they learn what it means to make and keep a commitment. They can really connect to their school, to build friendships with other students, and to develop their social skills and confidence. This feeling of responsibility encourages them to participate, to do their best and to be proud of their achievements. Importantly, they learn that every individual is responsible for the well-being of their community.
We are very proud of the opportunities that are provided to our students through liturgical celebrations, sporting events, incursions and excursions, and much more; opportunities that happen because of the volunteering efforts of our staff and parents.
In the coming months, we look forward to a return to many of the activities and events in our school that we deeply value. Some of these are led by our P&F with planning well underway for a number of social and fundraising events. These will be shared with the parent group in the weeks ahead.
We are very thankful for the commitment that so many of our staff and families have to our school and parish; for it is the work of the many that is powering our community and make it such a great place to be a part of.
May peace be with you,
Veronica Tomerini-Smith
A friendly reminder, if you do not wish for your child to complete the BCE Listens survey please opt out by completing this short form before Monday 23 May.
Assistant Principal - Administration News
Good afternoon lovely families …
I hope you are all travelling well. I have been so very proud of our Year 3 and Year 5 students as NAPLAN draws to a close for another year. Our students have all tried their best and worked beautifully through the four NAPLAN tests over the past two weeks. I must keep reminding myself that this is actually the very first Naplan that ALL of students have sat (Year3 AND Year 5) as our current Year 5s were the cohort for whom Naplan was cancelled back in 2020 when they were in Year 3. They were ALL superstars!
Thank you all so much for supporting your beautiful children through this time. I’d also like to acknowledge the work of our wonderful teachers in both Year 3 and Year 5/6 who have worked alongside our students, preparing them for NAPLAN and supporting them all so gently over the past two weeks. Another shout out to the wonderful Liz Morrissey (PLL) who has worked incredibly hard to prepare our school, our teachers and our students so that Naplan ran seamlessly here at Guardian Angels’.
School Photos
I know this has been in the newsletter now for the past several weeks, but just a reminder that school photos will be taken on MONDAY and TUESDAY next week (23 & 24 May). As you always do, the best way you can support this grand photographic event is to make sure your little one/s come to school dressed in their FULL (formal) SCHOOL UNIFORM on both Monday and Tuesday. We would like every student to wear their full formal uniform on both days (except Prep of course who will wear their sports uniform as usual). Be sure they have the correct uniform requirements, including black leather shoes (not sandshoes) and the proper white socks. The deadline for sibling photos has passed today (Thursday 19 May) but you are still able to order school photo packages. Please refer to the online booking instructions included in this newsletter.
Blessings for the coming week

Student Led Parish Mass
On Sunday evening, we had over 15 Year 2 families and several other families from school come to our first student led Parish Mass. It was a lovely evening where the school and parish communities came together in prayer. Our Year 2 students led the community through the readings, prayers of the faithful, offertory procession and through some songs with actions. We look forward to strengthening our parish and school community connections further this year.
Remaining School Led Parish Masses for 2022, dates will be confirmed and communicated soon.
- June – Year 3
- July – Year 5/6
- August – Year 1
- September – Prep
- October – Year 4
Sacramental Program
This weekend, many of our Year 3 students embark on the next step in the faith journey. They will participate in the first of four preparation sessions for the sacrament of Confirmation.
The Sacrament of Confirmation is the second of the three sacraments of Christian initiation. Confirmation completes Baptism, by which in the laying on of hands and the anointing with Chrism Oil, which first happened at Baptism, we are confirmed with the fullness of the Holy Spirit. We are reminded of our participation in the ministry and mission of Jesus and strengthened to follow Jesus more closely.
The Sacrament of Confirmation consists of the renewal of baptismal promises and the laying on of hands and anointing with the oil of Chrism. The anointing of the candidate is a sign of confirming the gift of the Spirit and calling the candidates to use these gifts to become involved in the life and mission of the community. Usually, the bishop presides over this sacrament.
We wish the students undertaking this special step in their faith journey every blessing for the next five weeks leading up to their confirmation.
National Sorry Day
Next Thursday 26 May, we will be holding a special prayer service for National Sorry Day. We would like to invite you to join us at 2:00pm in the Shed for this important day of recognition.
“National Sorry Day is a day to acknowledge the strength of Stolen Generations Survivors and reflect on how Australians can all play a part in the healing process for the people and nation. While this date carries great significance for the Stolen Generations and other Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, it is also commemorated by Australians right around the country.”
Children’s Liturgy
This Sunday 22 May is Children's Liturgy of the Word at the 9:00am Mass. Please come along and bring your children to this 9:00am Mass, where they will go out with catechists to hear the Liturgy of the Word and complete an activity.
Blessings for the week ahead,
Hannah Goodwin

Drop off and pick up zone volunteers
Thank you to those parents who have already so generously volunteered their time in the pick up zones. We truly appreciate your help.
We would love parent helpers at both campuses from Term 2. Pick up zones operate from 8:00am – 8:25am in the morning and from 2:55pm – 3:20pm in the afternoons. It's an easy 25 mins, opening car doors, helping little people in and out of cars.
If you can spare 20-30 minutes once or twice a week please email Jenny Druce at jdruce@bne.catholic.edu.au with your preferred day, time and campus.
If I have nominated you for a shift, and it’s not suitable, please let me know.
A friendly reminder, before commencing your role as a volunteer or other personnel at our school, you are required to complete the online volunteer training. The training can be found here: https://www.bne.catholic.edu.au/students-parents/student-protection/Pages/Student-Protection-and-Code-of-Conduct-Training-for-Volunteers-and-Other-Personnel.aspx
You will need to download, print and complete your registration form, which is contained within your online training. Return it to the School Office prior to commencing your role.
Covid 19 Update
COVID-19 in our school community
We continue to have positive cases of COVID-19 in our school community this week. These cases are currently isolating as required by Queensland Health and we wish them well as they recover.
A reminder to keep your child at home if they are experiencing any COVID-19, cold or flu-like symptoms, however mild. If we contact you because your child is unwell, please collect your child as soon as possible. This will help us to reduce the risk of spreading infections in our school.
Thank you for your support and understanding in these challenging times.
Second-hand Uniform Shop
The second hand uniform shop will open on the first Monday of the month. The next shop open will be on Monday 6 June. The shop will open between 7:30 and 8:00am on the GA campus. Each item is $5. Cash only sales.
A big thank you to Shannon Dobson for her invaluable time in managing the second hand shop.

Send in your favourite kindness quotes or stories of your random acts of kindness, together with your name and class, to Mrs Druce in the School Office to see them featured in the school newsletter or on the school's electronic sign board.
