From the Principal
Guardian Angels’ School has been invited to participate in the AERO (Australian Education Research Organisation) Learning Partner Project.
We are one of only three BCE schools who are participating in the project. Our nomination by BCE was based on the strong alignment between our Explicit Improvement Agenda (EIA), that focuses on evidence-based practices in writing, and the core objectives of the project, that aim to enhance the implementation of evidence-based teaching practice.
This is an exciting opportunity for our school and I’ve included an overview of the project below.
What is the AERO Learning Partner Project?
- The learning partner project with schools is an opportunity for AERO and schools to work together to enhance implementation of a selected evidence-based teaching practice.
- Through the learning partner project, AERO will aim to be a ‘value add’ for schools and systems. The project:
- aims to offer schools genuine insights, expertise and resources to support implementation of an effective evidence-based practice, using processes that are also transferable to other practices.
- will involve a staged approach to implementation that includes professional learning and coaching delivered through AERO Implementation Consultants and others.
- Includes monitoring and evaluation that will be used to support real-time improvements in participating practice settings and to generate overall learnings about implementation.
- Learnings will be shared with participating schools and systems, within AERO and publicly via AERO’s website and other communication channels.
- The selected evidence-based practice for learning partner projects will be explicit instruction (which will ultimately sit within a science of learning framework). Components of explicit instruction are detailed in AERO’s explicit instruction rubric. Explicit instruction has been shown to have high effectiveness, but there are components that could be enhanced.
What are the objectives and scope of the project?
The key objectives of the learning partner project is to:
- learn about promising approaches to implementing evidence-based practices and using evidence in schools.
- use an evidence-informed approach to provide direct support and guidance to schools to strengthen practice and ultimately demonstrate impact.
- generate examples of effective implementation of evidence in schools.
Learning partner projects are not a form of research (though they will use processes associated with ethical and responsible conduct). Any data collected by AERO through the learning partner project will be managed safely and securely, protecting the privacy and confidentiality of those involved. It must accord with AERO’s Privacy Policy, Data Management Policy and Guidelines, and Research data security procedure. It must also meet your system’s privacy policy.
What will the project look like at Guardian Angels'?
- The project aligns with our EIA, with the core of the project focused on Years 3 & 4.
- Our AERO Partner, Dylan Evans, will be on site each Wednesday. During the project, Dylan will facilitate professional learning, engage in modelling and guided practice sessions and coaching.
- The project includes a sequence of professional learning for our Prep – Year 6 teachers, with the teaching teams in Years 3 & 4 attending several workshops outside of this time for specific PD and sharing of key project elements.
- Most of the activities will take place over the 2023 school year, with a follow up in Semester 1, 2024.
Blessings for the week ahead

Good afternoon lovely families,
Dance Superstars (Prep-Year 2)
Don’t forget to pop this very important date into your diaries … Friday 16 June @ 2:00pm. Our littlest angels in Prep – Year 2 started their dance lessons last week. On Friday 16 June we will enjoy the Superstars Dance Extravaganza (that’s what I call it). This is one of my most favourite days of the whole year … Hopefully you will be able to join us on 16 June in the Shed to witness our little dancing kings and queens.
Life Education
We are so excited to welcome our friends from Life Education back to Guardian Angels from Monday 8 May. They will be here with us until Wednesday 17 May. Throughout this time, each class will enjoy one lesson with the Life Education team.
Life Education has been working with Queensland students for over 30 years; empowering our wonderful children with knowledge and skills that encourage healthy, safe lives.
In the world around us, these life skills are as important as ever. Through the Life Education programs, the students learn about key influences on health and wellbeing, including nutrition, cyber safety, bullying, substance abuse and use, emotional health and relationships. This is done in an informative, age appropriate and entertaining manner .. and the students really love to ‘chat’ with Harold the Healthy Giraffe.
Allow me to provide you with a snapshot of the Life Education program content for each year level in 2023 for your information:
Prep: Harold’s Friendship
This module focuses on the things that children can do to keep themselves healthy, including:
- the importance of personal hygiene
- choosing foods for a healthy, balanced diet
- benefits of physical activity and sleep
- ways to keep safe at home, school and in the community
Year One: Safety Rules
This module helps students to problem solve through:
- recognising safe and unsafe environments
- how to care for others
- behaviours that maintain friendships
- places and people who we can go to for help
Year Two: Growing Good Friends
The animated story that students will enjoy in this module will allow the students to:
- explore what healthy messages mean
- identify safety signs
- recognise how physical activity and nutrition contribute to a healthy lifestyle
- explore how positive relationships benefit our health and wellbeing
Year Three: The Inside Story
Throughout this module the students will explore the functions of various body parts and influences that impact health. This includes:
- the benefits of healthy food for health and energy
- the function of the body systems: digestive, respiratory, circulatory and others
- factors that influence physical health such as nutrition, exercise and medicines
Year Four: Harold’s Diary
This module uses the platform of class diary entries over the course of a week at school to explore concepts including:
- emotions connected with new situations and change
- the importance of friendships and support networks
- the safe use of legal drugs including medication and caffeine
- strategies to manage peer pressure and bullying
- benefits of an active lifestyle and healthy diet
Year Five/Six: Decisions
This module is explicitly directed at students of this age group and the content is always age appropriate. The content focuses on the use of both legal and illegal drugs; specifically what they are and how they are classified, the effects of drugs on our body, an analysis of the health messages of drugs in the media, and influences on decision making (eg family, peers, media, culture, the law).It explores the students’ decision making processes as they get older and targets the improvement of decision making skills by looking at:
- choices
- consequences
- responsibilities
- facts
- influences
- strategies and skills to be safe
School Photos
Our official school photos day is scheduled for Monday 29 May. Historically school photos have been taken over the course of two days, however they will be taken on the one day this year. I just want to let you all know as I know that some people make appointment plans around the photo day.
There will not be any catchup photo days at school so it would be wonderful to have as many of our beautiful students here as possible.
It is an expectation that all students wear their FULL FORMAL SCHOOL UNIFORM for School Photo day. Of course this includes correct hair ties, shoes and socks. Our Prep students will wear their sports uniform as usual.
The students in 2 Red and 2 Yellow will have HPE in the afternoon on Monday 29 May. These students must also arrive at school in their full formal school uniform please. Of course you may pack their sports uniforms in their bags if you want them to change for their sport lesson in the afternoon. This is optional. The students can certainly participate in their sports lesson in their day uniform as a one off. I will schedule these Year 2 students early in the day, allowing time for them to change into their sports uniform if you feel that is necessary.
Please see the instructions for ordering.
Parents who would like to order family/sibling photos can the use same Access Key H655NJ5P.
An important note on family/sibling photo orders: these orders must be placed by 4:30pm, Sunday 28 May. Any family/sibling photos that have not been ordered before the cut-off will not be taken. Unfortunately, the photographers cannot make any exceptions on the day.
All students will have an individual photo taken on Photo Day regardless of whether an order has been placed. Individual student ordering will stay open after Photo Day however orders placed after the bulk of orders have been printed will be sent directly to parents and will incur a postage charge per order.
EDSCO Bike Winner
Guardian Angels’ work proudly alongside our book supplier EDSCO to ensure our families have access to the most cost efficient and user-friendly book service each year.
Edsco have generously donated a bike (including helmet) to our school each year for the past three years as a ‘thank you’ to our families for using their service.
Every family who uses Edsco to supply your books for the new year goes into a draw. I automatically include all Prep families in this draw as your book packs are ordered by the school on your behalf and delivered to the school.
I just love it when I see the student’s name pop up in the random name selector we use to identify our winner.
The winner of the EDSCO bike this year is beautiful Stella from Year 5. Stella received her bike and helmet on the whole school assembly yesterday. Congratulations lovely lady.
Blessings to you all for the coming weeks

Season of Easter
As the Easter Season continues, let us remember the ultimate sacrifice that Jesus made for us.
Mother’s Day
As we enter the month of May we remember the significance of Mary, the Mother of Jesus. In the Catholic tradition, May is dedicated to Mary. Many of our classes are looking at various prayers that are devoted to Mary, including the Hail Mary and the Magnificat. On the 24th May, we celebrate the feast of Mary, Help of Christians. Mary, the mother of Jesus, is the patron saint of Australia; not to be confused with St Mary of the Cross Mackillop, who is Australia’s first saint.
It is timely, that while Jesus’ mother is celebrated in the May, so we celebrate our own mothers and special women in our lives. We would like to wish all the Mother’s in our community a very happy Mother’s Day and invite you to join us in prayer, for all Mother’s.
Whether you are a mother or a grandmother, aunt or god mother, we wish you the most wonderful of days.

Too sick for school?
Please keep your child at home if they are experiencing any COVID-19, cold or flu-like symptoms, however mild.
If your child vomits or has diarrhoea at home we ask for 24 hours after the last episode of vomiting or diarrhoea before your child returns to school.
If we contact you because your child is unwell, please collect your child as soon as possible. This will help us to reduce the risk of spreading infections in our school.
Thank you for your support and understanding in keeping our school community well.
Drop off and pick up zone volunteers
We would love parent helpers in pick up zones this year. Pick up zones operate from 8:00am – 8:25am in the morning and from 2:55pm – 3:20pm in the afternoons. It's an easy 25 mins, opening car doors, helping little people in and out of cars.
