From the Principal
For many people, particularly our young people, the strongest role models are not generally celebrities and sports people, but family members. The people who they admire most are the real people in their lives. As parents, it is important to recognise that you are often the one who inspires them. Having an interest in others and a willingness to listen to their stories is important.
As you move towards the end of semester one and prepare to receive our written reports, this is a great opportunity to share in and celebrate learning progress and achievements. There is so much pride in the way that children share their ‘story of learning’ with those who they admire most – their parents and family! It is always a ‘celebration’ and one that we look forward to in our community of learning. I thank our staff and students for their commitment and efforts over the semester, and our parents and other family members who have walked with each of our students on their learning journey.
So as we come to the end of another busy term, let’s take the ‘time to find and affirm the best of each person we meet, whether spouse or sibling, colleague or child, and enjoy the blessedness of the minutes, hours, days and years of our lives’ (Ann Rennie; Australian Catholics.com.au).
As we prepare to bring the school term to a close next Friday 23 June, may you all have a wonderful break. May the reflection below guide you as you seek many opportunities in the vacation to share in the company of family and friends:
reading based on the letter of Paul to the Ephesians:
Give yourself to one another completely.
Be generous in your giving and make no conditions for these gifts.
Love one another constantly and fully. Be humble in your acceptance of each other’s love.
Be honest with each other, be thankful for each other’s love and strive to develop its richness day by day.
Respect each other in every way.
Be patient with one another’s weaknesses and accept each other.
Communicate constantly with one another; be calm, patient, tolerant and reasonable in your communication.
Be capable of good listening. Share with one another misfortune and good fortune alike.
Be compassionate and express your love for one another constantly.
Know your limitations and be honest with yourself as you are with one another.
(Adapted from: Anne Doyle, Australian Catholics, Building Better Relationships, Spring 2009 vol 17 no 4)
I am taking a short period of long service leave next week, commencing Monday 19 June 2023 until Friday 23 June 2023 (Week 10). I will be checking in with the school regularly, however, during my leave, Nicole Waller will be deputising in my absence. Rhiannon Cameron (APRE) and Elisha Thatcher (PLL) will also provide leadership support.
Thank you to all in our Guardian Angels’ community for sharing in another great term at our school and I look forward to seeing you all again in Term 3.
Blessings for the week ahead
Veronica Tomerini-Smith
Assistant Principal - Administration
Good afternoon lovely families,
Dance Superstars (Prep-Year 2)
Well it’s finally here … Friday 16 June @ 2:00pm … the Prep-Year Two Superstars Dance Extravaganza. Parents and friends are most welcome to join us tomorrow (Friday 16 June) in the MC Shed for a prompt 2:00pm start.
Please remember:
- Entry into the school for the concert is through the MC PINE STREET gate (opposite the Police Station).
- The gate will be opened at 1:45pm. The concert will begin at 2:00pm.
- PLEASE BRING YOUR CHAIR/S. Seating is limited to the tiers that run along the side of the shed. This will give you a side view of the dances.
- As media consents for our students vary, PHOTOGRAPHY and/or FILMING of this event is NOT ALLOWED. It is important that we respect the privacy rights of all our parents/families and we appreciate your support in this.
Semester One School Reports
The classroom and specialist teachers have worked incredibly hard over the past several weeks to finalise the Semester One Summary of Achievement for each student (Semester One report). I will travel over to North Lakes on Tuesday to finalise the reporting processes required. The Semester One reports will be uploaded to the Parent Portal on Tuesday 20 June by 5:00pm. This is where parents access their child/ren’s reports. You will not receive a hard copy of the report/s so it’s important that you can access the Parent Portal. If you experience any difficulties logging in, please phone the school and our office staff will be able to help you. Please remember that once your child leaves Guardian Angels, you will no longer have access to the Parent Portal and so will not be able to access your child/ren’s reports. It is always a great idea to download them and print and/or save them for future use and reference.
Prep – Year Six Athletics Carnival
Next Thursday 22 June, Guardian Angels will enjoy our Prep – Year Six Athletics Carnival. The carnival will be held at Iona College, beginning just after 9:00am and finishing at around 2:15/2:20pm. Students may start to arrive at the venue from 8:30am, (no earlier please) and parents are responsible to transport their child/ren to and from the carnival.
PLEASE NOTE: THERE WILL BE NO DROP OFF OR PICK UP ZONE (Akonna Street) PROVISION, or GENERAL SUPERVISION on the Guardian Angels’ Campus on Thursday 22 June.
Most staff will be arriving directly at Iona and there will be no staff supervision at all on the Guardian Angels’ Campus in the morning or afternoon.
There will be buses available to transport students to and from school for those families who absolutely require this, however parents have already been requested to inform the school if bus transportation is required on the day. If you have indicated that you require bus transportation to and/or from school, and you no longer require this service, it is very important that you let the school know as we have prepared bus manifests and organised the students to streamline the commencement of the carnival.
For those students who are travelling to the carnival by bus, the only drop off area to the school will be the MC Campus (Pine Street). Students are to arrive at school and enter through the Pine Street gate only (except for the OSHC students). This can be no earlier than 8:05 as always. Students will remain in the shed area until they are organised into bus groups. The students will be dropped back to the shed area at the end of the day if they are catching a bus back to school from the carnival. The only collection point again will be the MC Pick Up Zone (Pine Street).
Melanie Denmead (HPE Teacher) has provided information to parents through parent slips. This information includes details regarding transportation, parking an outline of the day, lunch arrangements and so on. The students are to bring their lunch with them as options for students may be limited on the day. Be sure to read through this information so you are familiar with the details of this very exciting day. I have included a program outline and map of our event at Iona College for your perusal.
Our parent community is welcome to join us for the day. We do ask that during the main running events, parents remain behind the fence line and not to encroach onto the running track area. During the rotation events, parent will be most welcome to join their child’s group and share in the experiences of the rotational activities in this way.
This is going to be yet another wonderful day for our school community, and I extend my most genuine thanks to all of our wonderful parents/friends who have officially volunteered to take a position of responsibility on the day. Also my thanks to Annalise Olm who works tirelessly at these events to feed the staff and provide food options for our community. Thank you also to the staff who support Mel in preparation for this event and finally to Mel Denmead. Mel has worked incredibly hard to ensure this Athletics Carnival is fully prepared and that it will be a wonderful day for all.
Blessings to you all for the coming weeks,
Nicole Waller
Assistant Principal - Religious Education
As we come to the end of the term, we reflect on everything that we have achieved over the last 6 months. It is hard to believe that we are already half way through the school year. What a fantastic first semester we have had at Guardian Angels’. We thank God for everything we have experienced. While not all the experiences leave us with a smile on our face, we know that every experience teaches us something.
NAIDOC Week
NAIDOC Week, will be held 2-9 July, the theme this year is FOR OUR ELDERS.
Across every generation, our Elders have played, and continue to play, an important role and hold a prominent place in our communities and families. They are cultural knowledge holders, trailblazers, nurturers, advocates, teachers, survivors, leaders, hard workers and our loved ones. Our loved ones who pick us up in our low moments and celebrate us in our high ones. Who cook us a feed to comfort us and pull us into line, when we need them too. They guide our generations and pave the way for us to take the paths we can take today. Guidance, not only through generations of advocacy and activism, but in everyday life and how to place ourselves in the world. We draw strength from their knowledge and experience, in everything from land management, cultural knowledge to justice and human rights. Across multiple sectors like health, education, the arts, politics and everything in between, they have set the many courses we follow. The struggles of our Elders help to move us forward today. The equality we continue to fight for is found in their fight. Their tenacity and strength has carried the survival of our people. It is their influence and through their learnings that we must ensure that when it comes to future decision making for our people, there is nothing about us - without us. We pay our respects to the Elders we’ve lost and to those who continue fighting for us across all our Nations and we pay homage to them. As this is the last week of the holidays, we will be acknowledging this week in Week 10 of Term 2, with a Quandamooka Day.
Ordinary Time
We are currently in the Liturgical Season of Ordinary Time. Ordinary Time starts after Pentecost Sunday and will continue until the First Sunday of Advent. There is another period of Ordinary Time beginning after the Christmas season and continuing until Lent begins. During Ordinary Time, the priest’s vestments are green, which symbolises hope. Ordinary time is a time for learning, growing and remembering the Church’s mission.
Class Mass Timetable – Term 3
Next term we are excited to continue our class masses. We will be combining our class masses with sacred singing and over the remainder of the year all classes will have a chance to host Mass in our beautiful church.
Below are the dates, time of mass and hosting classes, we hope to see you there.
Year Level Parish Mass
Next term we have three Year Level-led masses within our Parish. We invite our Year 2, Year 3 and Year 1 families to join us for 5pm Parish Mass on the following dates. We look forward to seeing you.
As we come to end of Term 2, I invite us to join in prayer.
Let us pray...
Lord, we thank you for the many blessings we have received this term.
We voice our gratitude for the good things you have done, and we praise you for all who have shared in the work of our school.
We ask you to bless all our learners, their families and our staff and give them refreshment and peace during these holidays.
Amen
I wish you all a very safe and happy holiday. I look forward to seeing you all in Term 3.
God bless and take care,
Rhiannon Cameron
Japanese Term 2
It’s been a busy finish to the term for the Year 5 and 6 students in Japanese as we wrap up an exciting Sumo unit. As part of the unit, students were introduced to the traditional attire worn by Sumo wrestlers known as “mawashi”. The mawashi is a distinctive loincloth-like garment that Sumo wrestlers tightly wrap around their waist. Our aspiring Sumo wrestlers enjoyed trying on the mawashi and practicing some of the fundamental moves employed by Sumo participants during tournaments. Students also enjoyed a Sumo tournament – Ton Ton style (paper sumo match).

Rugby 7s
This week our students participated in the BCE Rugby 7’s Carnival. The students had a great day and enjoyed developing new skills for the game of Rugby. Our Under 10’s team had many students new to the game and they worked hard as a team to achieve an overall result of 4th place. They did an amazing job! Our Under 12’s had many of our Year 4 students stepping up to out in a courageous team effort and demonstration of fantastic rugby skills to come 4th in the division. Fantastic effort by all! Thank you to all the parents for your commitment to training sessions and the carnival day. Also a huge shout out to David Marshall for his commitment to train both teams, organise a trial game and to attend and coach on the Carnival Day, we can’t thank him enough!!!!

Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on School Students with Disability (NCCD)
Every year, all schools in Australia participate in the Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on School Students with Disability (NCCD). The NCCD process required schools to identify information already available in the school about supports provided to students with disability. These relate to legislative requirements under the Disability Discrimination Act 1992 and the Disability Standards for Education 2005, in line with the NCCD guidelines (2019).
Information provided about students to the Australian Government for the NCCD includes:
- Year of schooling
- Category of disability: physical, cognitive, sensory or social-emotional
- Level of adjustment provided: support provided within quality differentiated teaching practice, supplementary, substantial or extensive.
The information assists schools to:
- Formally recognise the supports and adjustments provided to students with disability in schools
- Consider how they can strengthen the support of students with disability in schools
- Develop shared practices so that they can review their learning programs in order to improve educational outcomes for students with disability.
The NCCD provides state and federal governments with the information they need to plan more broadly for the support of students with disability.
If your child is included in the NCCD, it will have no direct impact on your child and your child will not be involved in any testing process. The school will provide data to the Australian Government in such a way that no individual students will be able to be identified- the privacy and confidentiality of all students is ensured. All information is protected by privacy laws that regulate the collection, storage and disclosure of personal information. To find out more about these matters, please refer to the Australian Government’s Privacy Policy (Privacy- Department of Education, Australian Government). Further information about the NCCD can be found on the NCCD Portal (Home- Nationally Consistent Collection of Data (nccd.ed.au)).
If you have any questions about the NCCD, please contact the Guardian Angels’ Inclusion Team (Renae Haggitt- Guidance Counsellor, Stephanie Sims - Support Teacher: Inclusive Education, Jayne Murphy - Support Teacher: Inclusive Education).

Too sick for school?
Please keep your child at home if they are experiencing any COVID-19, cold or flu-like symptoms, however mild.
If your child vomits or has diarrhoea at home we ask for 24 hours after the last episode of vomiting or diarrhoea before your child returns to school.
If we contact you because your child is unwell, please collect your child as soon as possible. This will help us to reduce the risk of spreading infections in our school.
Thank you for your support and understanding in keeping our school community well.
Drop off and pick up zone volunteers
We would love parent helpers in pick up zones this year. Pick up zones operate from 8:00am – 8:25am in the morning and from 2:55pm – 3:20pm in the afternoons. It's an easy 25 mins, opening car doors, helping little people in and out of cars.
If you can spare 20-30 minutes once or twice a week please email Jenny Druce at jdruce@bne.catholic.edu.au with your preferred day, time and campus.
I have had a few parents contact me about shifts and I will update the roster and publish in next Thursday's bulletin. If I have nominated you for a shift, and it’s not suitable, please let me know.
A friendly reminder, before commencing your role as a volunteer or other personnel at our school, you are required to complete the online volunteer training. Review of 5pm Sunday evening Mass time
After surveying parents at Guardian Angels’ School last year, the parish decided to change the Sunday evening Mass time from 6pm to 5pm to make it more accessible for young families. This was done as a trial period for one year – which has just ended – and the parish will now be reviewing whether to continue with 5pm or return the Mass to 6pm. The change has allowed us to run school-led Masses where each Year-level has led the readings, singing and other various parts of the Mass, as well as the regular Children’s Liturgy of the Word that is run each fortnight for children Prep to Year 3. It has been wonderful to deepen the children’s faith life through their participation with their families in the liturgical life of the Church. The review will be done by means of a survey form for those attending the 5pm Mass on Sunday, 25th June. All welcome who would like to contribute to the survey.
