Celebrating Grandparent’s Day at Guardian Angels’
Yesterday, we gathered as a community to celebrate Grandparents Day at Guardian Angels’. This is a very special day for our community as we had an opportunity to honour and celebrate the important role that grandparents have in the lives of the students at our school. It also is a time for our students to share in all of the great learning that they do each day and to showcase the school that we are so proud of.
It is easy in the busyness of each day to overlook that it is in the simple moments that we create lasting memories. Often, it is in the times that are unplanned, in the smallest of actions, that we make the memories that become our greatest treasure. Our children learn so much from their grandparents and are very special people in their lives. Grandparents Day acknowledges the hard work, commitment, faith and love that grandparents sow into the lives of their grandchildren.
Thank you to all the grandparents and special people who were able to join us this year. Many of our grandparents had travelled great distances to be with their grandchildren on this day, highlighting the significance of this day for our community.
Thank you to Father Thomas for leading our Grandparents Day Mass, Mrs Cameron for all your efforts to co-ordinate our day, and the Spirit Committee for leading our ministries.
Celebrating this day together is an important time that enables our students to make enduring memories with their grandparents and other special people in their lives.
Grandparents can show us love and gentleness
Grandparents can protect those they care for
Grandparents can be forgiving and understanding
Grandparents can provide us with the good things that we need
Grandparents can walk with us on our journey through life
Grandparents can show us the face of God
Blessings for the week ahead

Good afternoon lovely families,
Parent Teacher Interviews – Term 3
In the second last week of this term (Week 9), we will again be offering formal Parent Teacher Interview opportunities. These interviews are wonderful opportunities for parents to catch up with their child/ren’s teacher/s and celebrate the students’ successes and achievements. It is also allows for important discussion regarding ways that we, as a team, can support our students in areas of strength, challenge and with relationships with others. I always recognise how busy your lives are and it can sometimes be difficult to schedule opportunities to meet with the teachers, so I will flag these dates with you now. Monday 4 – Friday 8 September will be the week where Parent Teacher Interviews will be offered to our parents. Parent Teacher Interviews are easily booked through the PTO (Parent Teacher Online) link in the Parent Portal. The Parent Portal will open to parents on Monday 21 August. You will have until Wednesday 30 August to book an interview time. I will continue to communicate the relevant information to you through subsequent newsletters.
Uniforms
I would like to genuinely thank the parents who are working so hard to ensure their child/ren are wearing the correct uniform to school. Wearing a uniform appropriately allows us to show pride in our school community and supports the sense of belonging to this beautiful school family. It is really important that our students are wearing their uniforms correctly. This means that they are wearing the correct uniform on the correct day, including all aspects of the uniform. Uniforms should also be in good condition. I have been noticing a number of students who are wearing the incorrect shoes with certain uniforms. Students in Years 1-6 may not wear their sports shoes (sandshoes) with their formal day uniform. Sports shoes are only to be worn with the sports uniforms. Each class would be aware of the day/s to wear sports uniforms, as communicated by the classroom teachers. All other days, the formal school uniform should be correctly worn in its entirety. Thank you for supporting our efforts to represent our school appropriately and respectfully.
Dance Concert Years 3-6
Another one of my favourite times of the year!!!! The Superstars dancing lessons have begun for our students in Year 3-6. Every Friday until 8 September (Week 9) our students will enjoy a specialised dance lesson with our friends from Superstars. This culminated in, what I like to call, a DANCE EXTRAVAGANZA! You may think I am talking it up a bit … I AM NOT. While our littlest angels definitely rule over the ‘cute factor’, our older students dance up an absolute storm … Dancing with the Stars move over!!! It’s always wonderful to watch our older students … I marvel at the way they can move and groove … I can’t remember ever being able to move like some of these students can … even in my prime (a while ago to be sure).
Of course our beautiful parents and families are invited to join us for this concert so be sure to pencil it in to your diary and come along if you can. Friday 8 September at 2:15pm in the MC Shed. I will provide more information and reminders about this as the event draws closer. This one is not to be missed!
Drop Off and Pick Up Zones
Unfortunately, there are still a number of parents who are not using the Drop Off/Pick Up Zones appropriately. Given the reminders that have been included in a number of newsletters, this is becoming increasingly frustrating for the parents who are making a concerted effort to follow the requirements of using one or both of our zones.
In particular, there are a significant number of people who continue to cut around corners and jump queues. Please approach the zones from the correct area as this causes understandable frustration for those parents who wait patiently for their turn to enter the zone from the correct areas. It is also important that parents/carers inform any person who is responsible for using the zones of our expectations in these areas eg grandparents, friends, day carers etc
Some important things to note:
- All cars are to approach the Drop Off/Pick Up Zones from the identified areas please:
GA Campus … along Akonna Street from Cedar Street NOT Pine Street (please do NOT cut the corner from Pine Street to enter Akonna Street Drop Off/Pick Up Zone)
MC Campus … along Pine Street approaching from Tingal Road. - Please do not park/wait in front of residents’ driveways. They should be able to access in/out of their properties at any time, and we need to be respectful of this.
- ALL students are to exit vehicles from the KURB SIDE ONLY. Under no circumstances should a student be exiting a vehicle from the road side of the car.
- School bags must be in the car with the students: NOT stored in the back of the car/boot. We will not allow boots to be opened whilst in the zones.
- No drivers (or other passengers) are to get out of the car in the Drop Off/Pick Up Zones please. If your child cannot exit or enter a vehicle independently, the best option is for you to park your car and walk your child into school.
- Please DO NOT USE THE CHURCH CAR PARK, or anywhere in CHESTNUT STREET or BAY TERRACE as a Drop Off and/or Pick Up Area. Any student found waiting in these areas will be redirected to an assigned (and supervised) zone.
- Any student who remains in the Pick Up Zone from 3:20pm, will be taken to the respective campus office where they will remain safely with staff until they are collected.
Thank you for your kind understanding in this matter. It is really important that ALL families are following the expectations of areas such as Drop Off and Pick Up Zones in and around our school. This makes this service as efficient as possible and of course, helps to support the safety of our students … nothing is more important than that!!!
Blessings to you all for the coming weeks,
Nicole Waller

Catholic Education Week
This week is Catholic Education Week in Queensland and is celebrated annually in Week 3 of Term 3. Catholic Education Week is an opportunity for all 313 Catholic schools in Queensland to celebrate and promote their distinctive mission and ethos.
Catholic education strives to make a difference in the lives of those in our schools and in the wider community by challenging young people to live out the message of Jesus and to reach their full potential as compassionate, contributing, life-giving members of society.
This year’s theme is COMMUNITIES of FAITH, HOPE and LOVE. Each class will gather and celebrate this occasion through a class liturgy.
Grandparents Day
This week we celebrated Grandparents Day on Wednesday 26 July with a whole school mass, followed by the opening of classrooms afterwards.
26 July is also the day we celebrate the feast day of St Anne and St Joachim, the parents of Mary and the grandparents of Jesus. While they are not mentioned in the Bible they, too, played an important role in the life of Jesus.
Thank you to all the Grandparents, you play such an important part in the lives of your grandchildren.

Primary Learning Leader
Not only have our children been busy with their learning, but our teachers have as well! Over the past few weeks our teachers have participated in a Professional Development evening and engaged in staff meetings where we have commenced looking at Phase 3 of our school’s EIA (Explicit Improvement Agenda) Establishing a Moderation Framework. Our teachers have worked hard collaboratively to unpack What is Moderation, When do we moderate and Why do we moderate, so that we can develop a Moderation process and protocols for our school.
During the week our staff also participated in their first MMA (Measure Monitor Act) sessions for Term 3. During these sessions our teachers came together as a year level with our STIEs and myself to engage in professional dialogue about our reading data and our learners. From these rich discussions and observing the data our teachers established their Explicit Teaching Focus, Learning Intention, Success Criteria and Feedback strategy for their next targeted teaching. Our students are at the core of everything we do therefore our teachers work hard to produce quality teaching and learning opportunities for all our students.

Bayside Athletics Carnival
Last week 42 Guardian Angels students headed to the Bayside Athletics Carnival to represent the school. Christening the brand-new Athletics shirts, which were wonderfully funded by the P&F committee and designed by Nik Waller and the students, I could not have been prouder of the students' efforts. They "Lived the GA Way" pouring heart into everything they did. Thank you to Lisa Gear and Angela Pannekoek for working so hard in supporting our students to attend the event. Thank you also to those parents and carers who came along to cheer on the students. Well done everyone!

Too sick for school?
Please keep your child at home if they are experiencing any COVID-19, cold or flu-like symptoms, however mild.
If your child vomits or has diarrhoea at home we ask for 24 hours after the last episode of vomiting or diarrhoea before your child returns to school.
If we contact you because your child is unwell, please collect your child as soon as possible. This will help us to reduce the risk of spreading infections in our school.
Thank you for your support and understanding in keeping our school community well.
Drop off and pick up zone volunteers
We would love parent helpers in pick up zones this year. Pick up zones operate from 8:00am – 8:25am in the morning and from 2:55pm – 3:20pm in the afternoons. It's an easy 25 mins, opening car doors, helping little people in and out of cars.
If you can spare 20-30 minutes once or twice a week please email Jenny Druce at jdruce@bne.catholic.edu.au with your preferred day, time and campus.
I have had a few parents contact me about shifts and I will update the roster and publish in next Thursday's bulletin. If I have nominated you for a shift, and it’s not suitable, please let me know.
A friendly reminder, before commencing your role as a volunteer or other personnel at our school, you are required to complete the online volunteer training. This training needs to be renewed annually and can be found here: https://www.bne.catholic.edu.au/students-parents/student-protection/Pages/Student-Protection-and-Code-of-Conduct-Training-for-Volunteers-and-Other-Personnel.aspx
