Book Week
Thank you to Mrs Paljakka and 5/6 Red, Mrs Nearhos, Mrs Bynon and Mrs Lawer for a fantastic Book Week Assembly and Parade. It was wonderful to see so many of our parent community join us for this fun-filled and joyous event. Thank you must also go to our parents for supporting our Book Week Parade – your commitment is evident in the tremendous costumes seen in today’s parade showing us all what makes your family “read, grow, inspire”.
Community Consultation: Proposed Reimagining of Play and Outdoor Facilities (MC Campus, Bay Terrace & Chestnut St)
I am excited to share the proposed plan for the Revitalisation of the Mt Carmel Campus Play and Outdoor Facilities. This project aims to provide a safe, inclusive, and stimulating environment for students of all ages, fostering physical activity, social interaction, and creativity.
The need to revitalise the Mt Carmel Campus playground space and equipment was identified as part of master planning processes, with many components of the current play equipment reaching the end of product life.
Community Partnerships: Supporting our student
The spirit of our Guardian Angels’ community is evident in our partnerships. This willingness to work together for our students has a significantly positive impact on learning and wellbeing. The collaborative efforts on this project between our school, P&F, Brisbane Catholic Education, Parish and external consultants is enabling the creation of holistic and supportive environment for our students to thrive.
This project has garnered strong support from our Parents and Friends Association (P&F) and is seamlessly aligned to our school’s master planning. Supporting the revitalisation of play spaces at Guardian Angels’ has been a focus of the P&F’s activities over the past years and we are grateful for the contribution of $100,000 towards this project. The estimated costs of the overall project is approximately $270 000.
Additionally, over the past 18 months, this proposal has included extensive planning with external consultants and BCE Building Services and is informed by our master planning initiatives.
Our Reimagining Project:
- is specifically designed for our Bay Terrace area to be a feature for our school
- will include outdoor play spaces where our students can learn and play in an area that is inclusive, encourages physical fitness and imaginative play
- features a variety of play equipment and caters to different age groups and interests
- supports students during everyday routines and during OHSC and Vacation Care.
What are the project features?
The proposed Reimagining Project will include:
Fixed play equipment: A new, multi-level play structure incorporating climbing wall, slides, and interactive elements, promoting physical and cognitive development, as well as elements that encourage balance and coordination.
Nature-inspired revitalisation of Chestnut St fence line: The playground design is positioned to ensure that we maximise the natural shade areas along the Chestnut St fence line and maintain the oval green space. The inclusion of timber decks and seating along the Chestnut St fence line are beautiful features and can be used for reading, gathering and quiet time.
Feature wall (cnr Chestnut St and Bay Terrace) and natural hedge screen: The feature wall aims to provide a visual ‘presence’ for the school along Bay Terrace. This structure connects to a natural hedge aimed to reduce visibility from the bus stop and street.
Where can I view the draft concept and provide feedback?
We are currently engaged in community consultation around the draft concept. This includes gaining feedback from all in our community, parents, staff and students. After this consultation phase, the application will be submitted to Brisbane Catholic for approval within Capital Project processes.
I am excited to share the draft concept for community consultation at our Angels on the Oval event on Sunday 27 August 2023.
The proposal will be displayed near the popcorn and drinks stall, just outside the MC Admin Office area. Your feedback is welcomed and there will be an opportunity to share this at the display.
The MC playground project will stand as a testament to our school’s commitment to providing a dynamic and inclusive space for our students that is community centred. Through collaboration, innovation, and dedication, this playground will become a cherished asset for years to come.
I look forward to sharing in updates with you in the weeks ahead.
Blessings for the week ahead

Good afternoon lovely families,
Student Free Day
Every year in Term 3, schools throughout the Brisbane Catholic Education diocese have a STUDENT FREE DAY. We use this as a valuable professional opportunity to work together to strengthen teaching and learning practices throughout our school.
This student free day generally falls on the Friday of Week 8 in Term 3 each year.
This year, the STUDENT FREE DAY is FRIDAY 1 SEPTEMBER (Week 8). This is NEXT FRIDAY.
Schools will not be open for students on this day so please ensure arrangements have been made to support your family. Those families associated with OSHC and who may require student care for Friday 1 September, please contact OSHC directly to make those arrangements.
Parent Teacher Interviews – Term 3
In the second last week of this term (Week 9), we will again be offering formal Parent Teacher Interview opportunities.
These interviews are wonderful opportunities for parents to catch up with their child/ren’s teacher/s and celebrate the students’ successes and achievements. They also allow for important discussion regarding ways that we, as a team, can support our students in areas of strength, challenge and with relationships with others. The Parent Teacher Interviews will be held in Week 9 (Monday 4 – Friday 8 September).
It is really important that we adhere to our interview time; particularly as there will probably be other families waiting.
Parent Teacher Interviews are easily booked through the PTO (Parent Teacher Online) link in the Parent Portal. Parents are now able to book a Parent Teacher Interview through the PTO app. You will have until Wednesday 30 August to book an interview time.
Dance Concert Years 3-6
Another one of my favourite times of the year!!!! The Superstars dancing lessons are continuing for our students in Year 3-6. Every Friday until 8 September (Week 9), with the exception of the Student Free Day of course, our students will enjoy a specialised dance lesson with our friends from Superstars.
This will culminate in, what I like to call, a DANCE EXTRAVAGANZA!
Of course our beautiful parents and families are invited to join us for this grand dancing event so be sure to pencil it in to your diary and come along if you can. Friday 8 September at 2:15pm in the MC Shed. This one is not to be missed!
Blessings to you all for the coming weeks

Primary Learning Leader
Last week our teachers came together as a year level to participate in our second MMA (Measure Monitor Act) session for Term 3. During this time, we engaged in conversations around our student’s reading, reviewed our guided reading practices and discussed our explicit teaching focus moving forward.
Monitoring Meaning is a reading and comprehension strategy that many year levels are focusing on. Below is an information sheet that could be helpful to all year levels when reading at home.
During our MMAs we continued to engage in the moderation process with teachers bringing their English Unit and student’s writing samples to share. The teachers worked collaboratively with our ST:IEs and myself to establish a shared understanding of expected levels of student progress and achievement at this time. The teachers used the Achievement Standard from the Australian Curriculum to determine where students are at with their learning. They then engaged in professional dialogues to establish their next teaching responses to move students forward.
For effective moderation to take place teachers need to engage in conversations several times with their year level team to ensure consistency and a thorough understanding of what is being assessed within the achievement standard.
During these conversations, it was exciting to hear how confidently and positively the students have been utilising the Third Teacher (learning walls and exemplars) in their learning spaces to assist them in moving their own learning forward.

Code Camp - expressions of interest
CODE CAMP – EXPRESSIONS OF INTEREST
Guardian Angels' Primary School are looking to partner with Code Camp to offer a weekly coding after-school program, starting in Term 4. Code Camp after-school allows kids to hone their creative skills and keep practising through weekly sessions over the term! The fun and engaging content ensures students learn new creative skills in a safe, educational environment.
We would aim to run two 75-minute sessions on two separate days.
- Little Coders (P-2) on the GA Campus
- Coding (3-6) MC Campus
- Students in Years 3-6 would use their school 1:1 iPad
- Students in P-2 would use iPads from school
- The only website that students would access during these sessions would be (www.codecampworld.com)
Further information regarding Code Camp can be found at the website above.
If this is something you feel your child would be interested in, please access the link below to complete your expression of interest.

Too sick for school?
Please keep your child at home if they are experiencing any COVID-19, cold or flu-like symptoms, however mild.
If your child vomits or has diarrhoea at home we ask for 24 hours after the last episode of vomiting or diarrhoea before your child returns to school.
If we contact you because your child is unwell, please collect your child as soon as possible. This will help us to reduce the risk of spreading infections in our school.
Thank you for your support and understanding in keeping our school community well.
Drop off and pick up zone volunteers
We would love parent helpers in pick up zones this year. Pick up zones operate from 8:00am – 8:25am in the morning and from 2:55pm – 3:20pm in the afternoons. It's an easy 25 mins, opening car doors, helping little people in and out of cars.
If you can spare 20-30 minutes once or twice a week please email Jenny Druce at jdruce@bne.catholic.edu.au with your preferred day, time and campus.
I have had a few parents contact me about shifts and I will update the roster and publish in next Thursday's bulletin. If I have nominated you for a shift, and it’s not suitable, please let me know.
A friendly reminder, before commencing your role as a volunteer or other personnel at our school, you are required to complete the online volunteer training. This training needs to be renewed annually and can be found here: https://www.bne.catholic.edu.au/students-parents/student-protection/Pages/Student-Protection-and-Code-of-Conduct-Training-for-Volunteers-and-Other-Personnel.aspx
