From the Principal
A very warm, welcome to our families and community members for the 2024 school year.
We have a number of new families joining us from Prep to Year 6 this year. A special welcome is extended to all. I trust that your time at Guardian Angels will be enriching and rewarding, and that you will feel warmly welcomed into our school community.
I also extend a welcome to our returning staff and those joining our Guardian Angels’ team. In recent weeks, our staff have participated in a series of professional learning days. I am grateful for the wonderful team of professionals that we have at our school, and I continue to be inspired by the professionalism and enthusiasm that our staff have towards their roles.
With the start of the new school year, I welcome back our continuing staff and new staff to Guardian Angels. I welcome Fiona James (Year 3Y), Loren Cahill (Year 3B), Suz Faulkner (Internal Relief Team), Fiona Vella (Admin School Officer MC Campus) and Shelley Walters (School Officer) to our team.
I thank our staff for the commitment and pride that they take in providing amazing spaces for learning and teaching, and quality learning experiences. As a result, our students have been engaged and loving learning from day one.
As each child stepped into their new classes for this year, it was a time to remember that these are not just ‘classrooms’ but are spaces for learning. Learning that isn’t only about knowledge, but learning that supports the development of faith, resilience, and a sense of responsibility and belonging.
Together, we embark on the school year with open hearts and open minds, ready LIVE the GA Way as the cornerstone of our Catholic identity at GA, as we strive to live our motto, ‘To Achieve Life’. LIVE the GA Way has a focus on instilling ways of living values that shape each individual in our school community, each and every day. Living ‘our ways’ supports every student to recognise the gifts that they bring, the gifts of others, and the differences that make each person unique.
The introduction of ‘tokens’ for our students ‘Living the GA Way’ has a focus on teaching each student that the simplest acts can be the most powerful in transforming the world around them. It has been inspiring to see how a single ‘token’, to celebrate and recognise the small action of an individual, has rippled through our community, creating a positive and supportive atmosphere.
This year, let the simplicity of ‘our ways’ guide the actions and interactions of all in our community, students, staff, parents and friends. Together, let’s create a learning community that lives our faith through striving to LIVE the GA Way each and every day.
As with every school year, the possibilities of turning the ordinary into the extraordinary are
in front of us. I look forward to meeting and working with you all for the learning and teaching, and well-being of our students during the year ahead.
Parent Partnership Open Classrooms and Expo’
We are looking forward to welcoming our families to our ‘Parent Partnership Open Classrooms and Expo’ on Thursday 15th February 2024.
This year, we are excited to be launching a different format for our Parent Partnership sessions, with a focus on:
· welcoming families to connect to their child’s learning and teacher/s through ‘open classroom’ sessions.
· supporting the sharing of key messages for each year level around routines, policy and processes via an online format (SWAY), prior to the ‘open classroom’ sessions.
· showcasing the school’s priorities in an ‘Expo’ to highlight the connectors that support our learning community to ‘Aim High and Fly’.
Why the change of format?
The purpose of the new format is:
· to be centred on learning for your child/children through connection with their class teacher/s, and their learning space in an ‘open classroom’ experience.
· To provide flexibility for parents to access information around school routines, curriculum, behaviour learning, policy and processes prior to the open classroom sessions, and to access this information online at a time that supports individual family and work routines.
· To minimise the need to attend multiple sessions, across multiple days.
Please be aware that the open classroom sessions are not a time to share specific information about your child with the teacher.
Should you like to do this, please contact your teacher to arrange an alternative meeting time.
How will the open classroom sessions be structured?
· We are inviting families to attend an open classroom session together.
· Parents are invited to visit their child’s classroom, with their child, at any time during one of the open classroom sessions.
· Importantly, each classroom from Prep – Year 6, will be open for each of the sessions.
· This will enable parents to visit each of their child’s classrooms, in any order, during the times below:
Session 1: 3.15pm – 4.00pm Open Classrooms
· All year levels open for visiting
4:00pm – 4:30pm: BREAK
Session 2: 4.30pm – 5.15pm Open Classrooms
· All year levels open for visiting
Break Time
· When planning your classroom visit/s, please note the break time scheduled from 4:00pm to 4:30pm.
· Classrooms will not be open during this break time.
· We invite families to take the time to visit the ‘Aim High and Fly’ Expo, as part of the afternoon.
3:15pm – 5:15pm: ‘Aim High and Fly’ Expo – Library (MC Campus)
The Expo will be open for the duration of parent partnership sessions and will be in the library on the Mt Carmel Campus.
The purpose of the Expo is to:
· Set the Sails for 2024
o Sharing initiatives from the Annual Plan and Explicit Improvement Agenda
o ‘LIVE the GA Way’
· Showcasing our community partners (including the P&F, Board and Parish)
· Making Connections across our learning community
o Student Leadership (Year 5/6); Multi-age in Year 5/6
o Measure Monitor and Act
o Inclusion Framework
o OLI program (One to One Learning iPad)
How do I prepare for the open classroom sessions?
Each year level teaching team has created an online SWAY for the purpose of sharing important information about routines, behaviour learning, policy and procedures.
Parents will receive an email on Friday 9th February 2024 for each of your child’s/ren’s year levels.
· The email will have a link for your child’s year level for you to access the SWAY.
o Read the SWAY for your child’s year level prior to the parent partnership session.
o Read the SWAY from the leadership team to connect processes and policies that support our learning community. (This SWAY is the same for each year level, and you will only need to read this once).
· Choose an open classroom session to attend and visit each of your child’s / children’s classrooms during this time.
· Attend the session as a family, with your child.
· Visit the ‘Aim High and Fly’ Expo in the Library.
Welcome Father Joshy Parappully to our Guardian Angels’ Community
We welcomed Father Joshy Parappully to our school for our opening school mass yesterday. We are thankful to Father Joshy for celebrating mass with our school community and for the generous sharing of his time visiting our students in Years 4 – 6. We look forward to Father Joshy’s guidance and spiritual leadership as our Parish Priest in the times ahead.
P&F
The Guardian Angels’ P&F are preparing to welcome new and continuing families at the upcoming ‘Welcome BBQ’ on Friday, 09 February 2024.
Your P&F provides a friendly forum to share ideas and to become actively involved in your child’s school community.
Your P&F supports opportunities to volunteer and coordinates many exciting events for our community.
I am looking forward to welcoming our continuing parents and new parents to our P&F meetings and events this year.

Mobile IT: Personal Devices Policy (including wearable technology)
As we commence the school year, please take the time to review the school’s Mobile IT: Personal Devices Policy (including mobile phones and smart watches) to ensure awareness of expectations regarding mobile IT personal devices at our school.
Key points outlined below.
What is a mobile IT personal device?
A mobile IT personal device is classified by Brisbane Catholic Education to mean laptop and tablet computers, mobile and smartphones, media players and any other portable electronic devices with the ability to process, store and/or transmit electronic data. This includes smartwatches.
Why is a mobile IT personal device policy needed?
Guardian Angels’ School believes that a clearly stated and sensibly implemented mobile IT personal device policy is important for the following reasons:
· Schools, in partnership with families, need to provide clear guidance for students to become informed, safe, respectful, and responsible digital users.
· To regulate the use of personal devices by children in primary school, to ensure the students’ capacity to fully engage in their learning.
· To support the provision of a safe and inclusive learning environment for all children which considers student safety, health and wellbeing, equity of access and uniform durability, practicality, and expense.
· To ensure that the children at Guardian Angels’ Wynnum are not put at risk of harm. This can include:
· cyberbullying
· harmful content or behaviour
· safeguarding issues
· impact on their communication skills, mental health and wellbeing
How is the policy implemented at Guardian Angels’ School?
The schools’ position is that primary aged students cannot use their mobile phones and personal devices at school during school hours.
Guardian Angels’ Wynnum will restrict the use of personal digital devices, including mobile phones, and wearable technology during school hours.
· This includes devices with a school mode, as devices cannot be individually monitored or regulated.
Parents and carers of Guardian Angels’ students can request an exemption, outlined in genuine reasons below:
Must be accompanied by a genuine reason – which creates an exemption. · The student uses their device to monitor or manage a medical condition. · The device is an agreed adjustment for a student with disability or learning difficulties. · The device is used for translation by a student with English as an additional language or dialect (EALD).
I extend thanks to all for supporting the implementation of this important policy for our school community.
Date Claimer: Parent OLi (One-to-One Learning iPad) Program Boot (Years 3 – 6)
Detailed communication about our School’s OLi program (One-to-One Learning iPad) will be emailed to parents of students from years 3 – 6 on Monday 5 February 2024.
This year, the parent boot camp sessions will be online and enable consent to be managed via Parent Slips. All Parents of students in years 3 - 6 are required to complete the OLi boot camp session at the commencement of the program, each school year. This is to ensure that you are aware of the rights, roles and responsibilities of the school, student, and parent within our one-to-one iPad program. Also, that the information is responsive to changes within this area.
For 2024, the OLI program key dates are outlined below:
· Monday 5 February 2024: Email to parents with detailed information re: OLi Program
· Wednesday 7 February 2024: Parent Slip inclusive of online OLi bootcamp and consent forms.
· Wednesday 14 February 2024: OLi bootcamp and parent slip to be completed
From the Assistant Principal - Administration
Good afternoon lovely families …
I hope you are all travelling well … it has been so wonderful to welcome you all back to school for the 2024 school year. There is a lot of information for you to read through here. It might be one of those newsletters where you spend 10 minutes or so with a cuppa and read through all of the important information we need to share at the start of a new school year.
I have included some key procedures and reminders in today’s newsletter. Importantly, the expectations outlined within each area are for all children and families and we seek your support in taking the time to revisit and familiarise yourself with each:
o Before and after school supervision
o Drop off/pick up zone reminders
o Hair and uniform expectations
o Toys and electronic devices
Drop Off and Pick Up Zone Information
NO STUDENTS ARE TO BE AT SCHOOL BEFORE 8:05am
(with the exception of those students PREBOOKED into OSHC)
The school has only TWO designated Drop Off and Pick Up Zones. These are located in AKONNA STREET ONLY for the Guardian Angels’ Campus and Pine Street ONLY for the Mt Carmel Campus.
These are 2- minute passenger loading zones supervised by teachers and dedicated parent volunteers and are provided as a service to parents. The volunteers on the Junior Campus assist children to get in and out of the car with their school bags. It is a particularly helpful service for parents or family day carers who have babies and toddlers in the car.
PLEASE NOTE: The Drop Off and Pick Up Zones are a STOP DROP/COLLECT AND GO process.
Adults should not be getting out of the vehicle to assist. If your child cannot get out with the volunteer or buckle in themselves, it may be a little too early for them to use the zones. The helpers in the zones will NOT be buckling children into their seats. In addition, staff cannot leave the Drop Off zone to help a student to their class or area. This duty area is a supervision responsibility for our staff. If your child is still unsure of their environment and don’t know where to go, then the advice is to park and walk them in until they are feeling more familiar and comfortable.
The following guidelines have been developed to provide maximum safety for children, parents and helpers who use the zones. We require your full support when using these zones.
Morning Drop-Off
Operates 8.05am to 8.25am
• Akonna Street (GA Campus) Please approach the zone from Cedar Street ONLY; NOT from Pine Street. Cutting in means that you push in front of other drivers who are waiting in the queue.
· Year 1 and above should be able to get themselves out of the car at Drop Off (especially if they have used Drop Off in the past). It can be quite challenging in the mornings when there is only teacher on duty, so for those little ones who are able to get themselves out of the car once you reach the zone area, then please do so.
• Pine Street (MC Campus) Please approach the zone from Tingal Road direction.
• Use the zone like a quick moving taxi rank – THE ZONE/S ARE NOT TO BE USED FOR PARKING.
Please remain alert and watch for directions from the helpers. Also be mindful of traffic when pulling out of the zone.
• Move forward as a space becomes available. Please do not ‘rat run’ and pull out and in around other cars. This greatly increases the risk of an accident.
• The driver is to remain in the car AT ALL TIMES.
• The children must exit and enter ONLY from the PASSENGER/FOOTPATH side of the vehicle.
• Children’s school bags and other items need to be in the car; NOT in the boot. Teachers and helpers will not open boots, as it is extremely dangerous. Please do not ask children to get school bags out of the boot themselves. If you need to use the boot, please park legally elsewhere and walk children into school.
• The gates at Akonna Street and Pine Street are locked at 8:25 when the bell goes. Students arriving after the bell (8:25AM) must be accompanied to the relevant office by a parent to collect a Late Slip; NOT dropped at the drop off zone.
• Please display your family name on an A4 sheet (printed please) or Visor label sign on the passenger side of your windscreen or visor. Your child will then be called and be ready for collection, cutting down on waiting time. If you require a name card for your card, please call Charmon in the MC Office and she will arrange one for you.
• Leave a space for driveways when waiting in Akonna Street and on Tingal Road – please be courteous to our neighbours and never block access to their homes.
Afternoon Pick-Up
Operates 3.00pm to 3.20pm
• The afternoon pick-up has the same rules as the morning drop-off.
• Students remaining at the zones at 3.20pm will be escorted by the supervising teacher to the respective office to await collection, so please be assured they will not be left waiting anywhere unsupervised.
Sometimes we have cars that park illegally during the designated ‘2 minute times’. This makes it inconvenient and unsafe as well as difficult to keep the flow of traffic moving quickly. We thank you in advance for your patience in these instances. Please be aware of the parking limits and times of operation when parking around the school. Please reassure your child that, although they may not be able to see your car straight away, you will be there to pick them up.
Helpers are always needed to run this vital service for the school. It is a great way to contribute, so if you and a friend can spare 30 minutes a week we would really appreciate it. If you would like to help, please call the school office.
Before and After School Supervision
Supervision of children on both campuses commences at 8:05am each morning. Children who arrive before 8:05am are expected to be enrolled in Before School Care.
After school, children are supervised at the two school Pick Up Zones until 3:20pm. Children who remain at the Pick Up Zone after 3:20pm will be brought to their respective office where they are to be collected and signed out by a carer. Children are not to be waiting for collection at any unsupervised areas.
The Church Car Park, Bay Terrace and Chestnut Street (outside MC Office or anywhere along the street) are NOT Drop Off or Pick Up Zones. Students will be directed to relevant Pick Up Zone areas if found waiting or exiting the school in these places. Please do not ask your child/ren to use these places as a drop off or a pick-up area.
No play on the play equipment is allowed after school on the school grounds. Similarly, unless a student is enrolled in OSHC, games such as handball etc are not permitted after school whilst waiting for pick up or collection. Students and siblings are either to remain with parent or are to wait at the Pick-Up Zone for collection. This is a matter of safety as there is no supervision in these areas.
Uniform Reminders
Sports Uniform are worn on the days indicated by your child’s classroom teachers. This will align with their sport (HPE) lesson.
We are all proud of our school at Guardian Angels. The most obvious way we can show our pride in our school is the way we wear our school uniform. When we wear our uniform correctly it instils pride in our school and in ourselves. We are fortunate at GA to have a fine uniform and the vast majority of children and families support the proud wearing of it.
It is important to have reminders about some aspects of our uniform to ensure that every effort is made to wear it consistently by all in our community:
Shoes and Socks
o School shoes are to be all black leather (NOT black sandshoes).
o Sand shoes are to be worn with the sports uniform only and should be primarily white in colour.
o No coloured soles, skate style or slip-on shoes are to be worn.
o White ankle socks only. Low cut socks that are worn under the shoe line are not permitted.
Hair Reminders
o Haircuts are to be neat in appearance without excessive colours, shaving or designs (e.g. No bright colours, extensions, tracks, or rats-tails).
o Shoulder length or longer hair is to be neatly tied back.
o Hair accessories are to be simplistic and in school colours.
Hat
o School bucket hat is the only hat to be worn.
From time to time, it is recognized that children may not be in the correct school uniform. It is important that the school is informed by either a written note/email to the class teacher if this is the case and that efforts are made to ensure that this is corrected in a timely manner.
We do recognise that there are currently some delays in shipping that are impacting on supply. Thank you for your patience and we appreciate your communication with our office team as we work together to manage uniform requirements.
Toys
We strongly discourage students bringing toys to school. We are mindful that these can be lost and/or broken, or cause disharmony within friendships.
Curriculum Newsletters
Curriculum Newsletters are prepared by the classroom and specialist teachers every term. These newsletters are a valuable source of information relevant particularly to each year level. I strongly encourage you to read the relevant curriculum newsletter/s every term so that you are aware of the wonderful learning opportunities your child/ren will experience throughout the term, as well as important dates and reminders.
The Curriculum Newsletters are uploaded to the Parent Portal and emailed to our families on the Monday of Week 2 each term.

· Instrumental Music lessons occur each Thursday commencing Thursday 8 February (Term 1 Week 3).

I know this is a bit of information overload .. all very important reminders and I encourage all families to continue to connect with our school’s Facebook Page, Parent Handbook and the Parent Portal.
I’d just like to flag some upcoming dates for your calendars:
· Monday 5 February (Week 3):
Photos for ALL PREP STUDENTS and any student who is new to Guardian Angels'. These are NOT the official school photos which are taken in May (May 20). These earlier photos allow us to upload digital images of the students to our system for roll marking etc. There is no cost to parents for the photos in February. You will receive more timely information regarding the official school photos in Term Two.
· Wednesday 13 – Monday 25 March (Weeks 8 – 10)

· Monday 18 -Friday 22 March (Week 9):
Parent Teacher Interviews will run throughout Week 9. We strongly encourage ALL parents to book and attend an interview with your child/ren’s teacher/s. This is one important opportunity to connect with the teachers and identify how to continue to support your child in their learning … as well as celebrating their wonderful successes. You will be provided with important information around the booking of these interviews as the date draws closer.
· Wednesday 27 March (Week 10)
Guardian Angels’ Cross Country (Prep – Year 6)
Parents will receive more information regarding the Cross Country as the event draws closer.

Blessings of peace to you all for the coming week
Nicole Waller
From the Assistant Principal - Religious Education
Welcome to the start of the 2024 school year! The children have started the year with great enthusiasm and it is very pleasing to see all of them return to school looking so refreshed and happy!
As we begin the year, I look forward to seeing you all, please come and say hello 😊 my door is always open!
LIVE the GA Way
This year we continue to strengthen our LIVE the GA Way. At Guardian Angels’ we foster a community that believes in developing the whole child - academically, socially, emotionally, physically and spiritually. We understand we are a teaching and learning environment, and it is important we focus on a holistic approach for our children, so they have the opportunity to develop into happy, productive and successful members of society - 'To Achieve Life’
We embed through all we do and say, the GA Way:
Each fortnight at assembly we will share recipients of LIVE the GA Way. They are for students who have demonstrated they are LIVING the GA Way in all they do and say. We will announce our valued recipients at our whole school assemblies. To receive a LIVE the GA Award you need to be LIVING the GA Way by demonstrating one or more of our ways of living. For example, you may be living I – Inspire Others by being like Jesus and helping a friend or you may be living E – Engage Responsibly by making positive choices in the playground. Students can also earn tokens that will go towards a whole school reward. To get yourself a token means you need to show that you are living the GA Way. At assembly, we will be watching our token tower grow! Each term we will have a target to reach with a reward. For Term 1 our target is 15mins of extra play!
As a staff we commit to helping to build our student’s awareness and understanding of LIVE the GA Way. We have developed a yearly overview of a learning and teaching sequence provides learning moments for each of the LIVE the GA Ways to be unpacked and connected to our Franciscan Charism through keys words of wisdom shared by St Francis. The learning and teaching sequence will be used at key times throughout the year to help our students embed LIVE the GA Way in all they do and say.
The Presentation of the Lord
On the 2nd of February the Church celebrates the feast of the Presentation of the Lord which occurs forty days after the birth of Jesus and is also known as Candlemas day, since the blessing and procession of candles is included in today's liturgy.
According to the 1962 Missal of St. John XXIII the Extraordinary Form of the Roman Rite, today is referred to as the "Purification of Mary." This is known as a "Christmas feast" since
it points back to the Solemnity of Christmas. Many Catholics practice the tradition of keeping out the Nativity creche or other Christmas decorations until this feast.
On this day, we also reflect on the gift of consecrated life. While the momentary satisfaction of selfish living ultimately leads to emptiness, living a life of holiness, dedicated to God’s service, will give true contentment and peace.
As Pope Francis has expressed:
Consecrated life is born and reborn of an encounter with Jesus as he is: poor, chaste and obedient… And while worldly life soon leaves our hands and hearts empty, life in Jesus fills us with peace to the very end, as in the Gospel, where Simeon and Anna come happily to the sunset of their lives with the Lord in their arms and joy in their hearts.
Upcoming dates:
• Wednesday 7th February - Senior Leaders Commissioning – Shed – 1.50pm
• Week 3 – Project Compassion Launch
• Tuesday 13th February – Shrove Tuesday
• Wednesday 14th February - Ash Wednesday - Whole School Mass – Shed – 9am
• Tuesday 21st March – Harmony Day – Class Liturgy
· Thursday 28th March – Easter Liturgy – Whole School – Shed – 9am
I look forward to journey through 2024 with all our families. I wish upon us a year filled with happiness and love. I leave you with a blessing and every best wish for 2024.
May you trust your highest power that you are exactly where you are meant to be.
May you not forget the infinite possibilities that are born of faith.
May you use those gifts that you have received and pass on the love that has been given to you.
May you be content knowing you are a child of God.
Let this presence settle into your bones, and allow your soul the freedom to sing, dance.
It is there for each and every one of you.
Amen.
Wishing you all a wonderful term.
God bless and take care.

2024 Welcome
Welcome to 2024! It has been so wonderful walking into all our learning spaces here at Guardian Angels’ and seeing how engaged and motivated our students are with their learning already.
During our staff professional development days our teachers spent a significant amount of time strengthening our planning processes and engaging in professional learning around Version 9.0 of the Australian Curriculum (AC V9.0) to develop a deep understanding to ensure effective and targeted implementation. I look forward to continuing working with our teachers in this space to create wonderful learning opportunities that will engage all learners.
