Guardian Angels' Newsletter - Update Term 2 | Week 8
Term 2 Week 8 - School News
I was pleased to share in the announcement from Dr Sally Towns (Executive Director, Brisbane Catholic Education) that I have been appointed as Principal at Guardian Angels’ School, from the commencement of the 2023 school year.
This announcement is included below:
I am pleased to advise you of the appointment of Mrs Veronica Tomerini-Smith as Principal of Guardian Angels' Primary School, Wynnum, commencing in 2023.
Veronica's substantive role is Principal at Star of the Sea School, Cleveland. Veronica's leadership experience includes Assistant Principal Curriculum at St Joseph's Catholic School, North Mackay; Principal at Our Lady of the Sacred Heart School, Springsure; Assistant Principal Religious Education at St Martin's School, Carina; Principal at Star of the Sea School, Cleveland and Acting Principal at Guardian Angels' School, Wynnum.
Veronica's qualifications include a Post Graduate Certificate in Educational Leadership, Bachelor of Learning Management - Primary and a Masters of Educational Leadership.
This appointment follows public advertising and a selection process involving Fr Thomas McFadden OFM Cap, Parish Priest at Guardian Angels’ Catholic Parish, Wynnum, representatives from the school community and Brisbane Catholic Education.
I take this opportunity to acknowledge the significant contribution of Craig Acret, previous principal of Guardian Angels’ Primary School, Wynnum, who has moved to Principal at St Peter’s Primary School, Rochedale.
I am sure you will join me in congratulating Veronica on this appointment
I am thankful for the opportunity to continue to work alongside all in our Guardian Angels’ community, and look forward to journeying together in our learning community.
In the coming weeks, we will gather as a Guardian Angel’s community to celebrate with children from our school and parish as they receive the Sacrament of Confirmation.
Several years ago, I was working with a group of children who were preparing to receive the Sacrament of Confirmation when our Parish Priest stopped in for a visit. As a young teacher, I remember standing and listening intently as Father led the children in a discussion about the Holy Spirit and inevitably, one of the children asked, “But how do you know it’s there?” Before an answer could be offered, another child said, “It just is. You can’t see the wind but you know it’s there because you can feel it and see it moving things.”
As I listened to the Gospel reading at mass over the past weekend, I remembered this comment clearly as it offered such a simple and powerful image for us all. When we take the time to feel the spirit it is just like a breeze. A breeze is visible through the movement of the leaves around us or can be felt as it brushes against our face and, although we can’t see the Holy Spirit, we know that it is present in our witness, in the actions of those around us, and in the way that these actions make us feel.
At Pentecost, Jesus fulfilled His promise to send the Holy Spirit to enable the disciples to continue his work, giving them the courage and strength to do what is right. Pope Francis’ words remind us that, “the world needs men and women who are filled with the Holy Spirit”. As at the first Pentecost, the Holy Spirit enabled the miracle of being able to understand one another despite the barriers of differing languages; for us today, in the everyday, the Holy Spirit enables God’s power to bring us together in community with Him, so that we may all be one.
Confirmation is a special occasion, and I know that you will join with me in praying for these children and their families as they prepare to receive the Sacrament.
Year 5/6 Camp - Gold Coast
Surfing, rock climbing, quick jumps (aka jumping off tall towers... with a harness of course), archery, high ropes, beach games and more! A GA Mini Olympics saw the students competing in several events including tin foil basketball, paper straw javelin throwing, paper bag hammer throwing, bean bag shot put, paper plate discus, tandem cycling, dry land synchronised swimming and hula hooping!!
Camp was a huge success; pushing their limits and encouraging their friends; everyone was quick to fall asleep and slow to rise. Our student leaders learn to work as a team and push into their courage zones to achieve their goals and all while having fun.

Sports Aerobics Success!
Congratulations to our Sports Aerobics teams who competed in their very first competition for 2022 last Saturday. Four teams represented Guardian Angels’ across Years 1 to 6 with fantastic results:
Glitter (Year 1/2 girls) - 3rd
Gangams (Year 2 boys)- 2nd
Groovers (Year 3/4 girls) - 4th
GA Queens (Year 5/6 girls) - 4th
Well done to all of our students for their hard work practicing their routines and for their commitment to early morning rehearsals (and to our parents for getting them there; we're sure the early morning starts in this cold weather aren't easy!)
Our teams will continue training for their next competition on 18 June and we can't wait to hear how they go!
Met East Cross Country
Congratulations to Christina V, Year 5, for placing 10th in the 10 years' girls Met East Cross Country. The Metropolitan East Sport competition sees qualifying students compete from schools in six districts across South East Queensland. What an outstanding achievement!

Drop off and pick up zone volunteers
Thank you to those parents who have already so generously volunteered their time in the pick up zones. We truly appreciate your help.
We would love parent helpers at both campuses from Term 2. Pick up zones operate from 8:00am – 8:25am in the morning and from 2:55pm – 3:20pm in the afternoons. It's an easy 25 mins, opening car doors, helping little people in and out of cars.
If you can spare 20-30 minutes once or twice a week please email Jenny Druce at jdruce@bne.catholic.edu.au with your preferred day, time and campus.
If I have nominated you for a shift, and it’s not suitable, please let me know.
A friendly reminder, before commencing your role as a volunteer or other personnel at our school, you are required to complete the online volunteer training. The training can be found here: https://www.bne.catholic.edu.au/students-parents/student-protection/Pages/Student-Protection-and-Code-of-Conduct-Training-for-Volunteers-and-Other-Personnel.aspx
You will need to download, print and complete your registration form, which is contained within your online training. Return it to the School Office prior to commencing your role.
A reminder to keep your child at home if they are experiencing any COVID-19, cold or flu-like symptoms, however mild. If we contact you because your child is unwell, please collect your child as soon as possible. This will help us to reduce the risk of spreading infections in our school.
Thank you for your support and understanding in these challenging times.
Second-hand Uniform Shop
The second hand uniform shop will be open on the first Monday of the month with the next open day on Monday 11 July.
The shop will open between 7:30am and 8:10am on the GA campus. Each item is $5. Cash only sales.
A friendly reminder regarding the process for purchasing from the second hand shop:
- only parent volunteers, managing the second hand sales, are allowed in the storeroom
- second hand items are washed and bagged according to size so that finding stock is quick and easy
- due to the demand in short opening hours please take the item as given to you by our parent volunteers. It is not possible to sift through stock; if it is unsuitable it can be returned to the Mount Carmel School Office for a refund or exchange
- the shop has a small float on the day but the exact change is appreciated.
Demand for second hand uniform items is usually high so our parent volunteers truly appreciate your kindness and patience as they help as many parents as possible when the shop is open.
Superstars Dance Concert
The Superstars Dance Concert for all students in Prep, Year 1 and Year 2 is scheduled for Thursday 16 June at 1:45pm in the MC Shed.
All are welcome to join us for this grand event which is usually a packed house. The tiered grass steps along the side of the Shed will be available for seating but parents who are able to bring their own chairs will also be able to assemble behind the students at the back of the Shed.
Want to share your artistic talents, win a prize & help make your school safer for all students?
BCE is running an Art Design Competition for students to be involved in the creation of promotional material that will be used to enhance student safety.
Your design could feature on promotional material used in over 145 schools and worn by over 550 Student Protection Contacts (SPCs) in Brisbane Catholic Education! This may include t-shirts, lanyards, posters or buttons.
Your submitted artwork must represent the theme: Child Protection is Everyone's Responsibility
Students should think about what makes them feel safe, included and have a sense of belonging. Who are the people and what are the places and things that help students feel this way.
Competition will close on 15 July, 2022 at midnight. Entries received after this date will not be considered. Winners will be advised by email no later than 1 September 2022.
Winners will be invited to attend a special Child Protection Week event on 8 September 2022 at the BCE Office (2A Burke Street, Woolloongabba).
This is an exciting time for all BCE students to have a voice and help contribute to making BCE schools safer for all students.

Random Acts of Kindness
According to the Random Acts of Kindness Foundation (https://www.randomactsofkindness.org/) there are six core kindness concepts: Respect, Caring, Inclusiveness, Integrity, Responsibility and Courage.
Inclusiveness
At Guardian Angels' we show inclusiveness by valuing diversity and believing we are all created in the image and likeness of God, by encouraging all students to participate as full members of the classroom community, including full engagement in both academic and social environments, and there are clear policies that ensure a safe environment.
Send in your favourite kindness quotes, random acts of kindness, or how you are inclusive, together with your name and class, to Mrs Druce in the School Office to see them featured in the school newsletter.
