Guardian Angels Welcomed Marissa Dann: BCE Head of Education, Strategy, Policy and Innovation
Last week, we welcomed Marissa Dann to Guardian Angels. Marissa visited multiple learning areas from Prep – Year 5/6 during her school visit. She expressed her gratitude and thanks to all for her warm welcome to our school. Marissa thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to share in the learning and teaching with students and staff during her visits to learning areas. She was impressed with the student’s engagement in their learning, and in their ability and eagerness to talk about their learning and learning goals.
Marissa is planning to visit again in the short term, as she is eager to observe BOOST and have further conversations with our teaching teams around the Explicit Improvement Agenda: Plan for impact through targeted instruction.
NAPLAN Update: The preliminary NAPLAN data for 2024 was received recently. These school reports contain provisional data only, including raw scores and provisional proficiency standards for online tests including numeracy, reading, spelling and grammar and punctuation. This data will be used as part of data analysis routines during scheduled Measure, Monitor, Act sessions. These sessions enable teaching teams to work collaboratively to monitor student progress and inform teaching responses. We look forward to sharing final results and student reports in the future.
Playground Update: Reimagining of Outdoor Play Facilities MC Campus
The project is well underway with the new fence and retaining walls installed, old play facilities removed, and the ground prepared for seating and gardens. There is a hive of activity in the area now and below is an update on what’s happening for the project:
- Preparation for drainage works around the Chestnut St gate entrance is almost completed, with the concrete removed and area cleared. Drainage works will be completed prior to commencing installation of the play equipment.
- The signage is being finalised for the wall on the corner of Bay Tce and Chestnut St, with construction of the wall to commence in the coming week.
The contractors are working to minimise impact on operational routines during school hours around access and restrictions, and their efforts to have the Bay Terrace gate replaced and back in action with minimal interruption was appreciated.
A reminder that there is no access to either school or OHSC via the Chestnut St gate, with the Pine St gate to be used for before school and OHSC. Given the scope of works required in this area, it is expected that the Chestnut St gate will not be in use until closer to the completion of the project.
I am appreciative of the flexibility and patience of our community around some operational routines as we transition through the construction phases.
A broad timeline for completion of the project is by the end of this term (weather permitting it may finish a little earlier).
Once the playground is completed, each year level will have the opportunity to access and play in the space during scheduled sessions. The students are so very excited to play in their new play space, and this will support them to have the opportunity to enjoy the area together with their friends, and also enable staff guide them around how to ‘Engage Safely’ with the new equipment and in the area.
Thank you to the P&F for the support of this project and I know that we are all looking forward to our students being able to enjoy this revitalised space.
'Tell Them From Me' Survey (Parents & Students Years 4-6)
We are inviting students, teachers, and parents to provide feedback on their experience of our school using an online survey. The surveys are an important part of our whole school evaluation and planning process.
We would like to invite parents of students in years 4-6 to complete the Tell Them From Me (TTFM) Partners in Learning survey. As we value the role of parents and carers within our school community, we would greatly appreciate your feedback. The information you provide will be used to maintain our commitment to working together in partnership to further improve student learning and wellbeing at Guardian Angels’ School.
The survey is anonymous and will take approximately 20 minutes to complete. The survey is open until Friday 24 May 2024.
You can access your survey on your computer or mobile device by using this URL:

Please contact the school via pwynnum@bne.catholic.edu.au if you have any queries.

Good afternoon lovely families,
Dance Superstars (Prep-Year 2)
Don’t forget to pop this very important date into your diaries … Friday 14 June @ 2:15pm. Our littlest angels in Prep – Year 2 started their dance lessons last week. On Friday 14 June we will enjoy the Superstars Dance Extravaganza (that’s what I call it). This is one of my most favourite days of the whole year … Hopefully you will be able to join us on June 14 in the Shed to witness our little dancing kings and queens.
School Photos
Our official school photos day is scheduled for Monday 3 June. Historically school photos have been taken over the course of two days, however they will be taken on the one day this year. I just want to let you all know as I know that some people make appointment plans around the photo day.
There will not be any catchup photo days at school so it would be wonderful to have as many of our beautiful students here as possible.
It is an expectation that all students wear their FULL FORMAL SCHOOL UNIFORM for School Photo day. Of course this includes correct hair ties, shoes and socks. Our Prep students will wear their sports uniform as usual.
The students in 2 Red will have HPE in the afternoon on Monday 3 June. These students must also arrive at school in their full formal school uniform please. Of course you may pack their sports uniforms in their bags if you want them to change for their sport lesson in the afternoon. This is optional. The students can certainly participate in their sports lesson in their day uniform as a one off. I will schedule these Year 2 students early in the day, allowing time for them to change into their sports uniform if you feel that is necessary.
I will provide ordering details next week.
QC Netball Cup
Guardian Angels will be participating in the QC (Queensland Catholic) Cup for Primary Schools netball competition next Monday 20 May. This year we are fielding two teams (compared to just one last year) and we are so very excited to be enjoying this netball experience with the students from Years 4, 5 and 6.
My most sincere thanks goes to Lisa Gear, Clare Irving and Amelia Law who have been coaching, umpiring and assisting the development of both teams over the past several weeks.
Keep our beautiful netball superstars in your prayers on Monday as we head over to Downey Park (Windsor) to enjoy a day of netball fun.
I will be heading away on long service leave (only a very short stint) from Thursday next week (Thursday 23 May) until Friday 31 May. I will return to school on Monday 3 June (just in time for school photos).
Blessings to you all for the coming weeks

Month of May
As we journey through the month of May we remember the significance of Mary, the Mother of Jesus. In the Catholic tradition, May is dedicated to Mary. Many of our classes are looking at various prayers that are devoted to Mary, including the Hail Mary and the Magnificat. On the 24th May, we celebrate the feast of Mary, Help of Christians. Mary, the mother of Jesus, is the patron saint of Australia; not to be confused with St Mary of the Cross Mackillop, who is Australia’s first saint.
Mary Help of Christians Feast Day
The 24th of May is the feast of Mary Help of Christians, also known as Mary of the Southern Cross. Mary Help of Christians is the patron saint of Australia and has been since 1844. She is not to be confused with St Mary of the Cross MacKillop who is Australia’s first-born saint. We celebrate Mary, as May is the month dedicated to her. Mary, the Mother of Jesus, has taken many different names and Mary Help of Christians is just one of the many.
Pentecost
On Sunday the 19th of May, we celebrated the feast of Pentecost. Pentecost is when the Holy Spirit, in the form of fire, descended on many people gathered together. This also officially marks the end of the Easter season. The liturgical colour for Pentecost is red but now we will return to Ordinary Time and the colour green will be visible throughout the Church. We will have a whole school Mass at 9am Thursday the 16th of May to celebrate, all are welcome.
Sacramental Program
Our Sacramental Program for First Holy Communion has began. The students have been engaging in digital modules on a weekly basis. This weekend our
candidates will attend a workshop session to deepen their understanding of the sacrament. Mrs Waller and myself are looking forward to working with the students this weekend.
Class Mass Timetable – Term 2
This term we will continue our class masses. We will be combining our class masses with sacred singing and over the course of the year all classes will have a chance to host Mass in our beautiful church.
Below are the dates, time of mass and hosting classes, we hope to see you there.
Week | Date and time | Hosting Classes | Attending |
6 | 23rd May 2pm | 1 and 2 Red | All Year 1 and 2 classes |
8 | 6th June 2pm | Prep and 5/6 Red | All Prep and Year 5/6 classes |
God bless and take care,
Rhiannon
From the Primary Learning Leader
We are excited to announce a couple of events coming up this term in our Library.
National Simultaneous Storytime is on Wednesday, 22nd May at 12noon.
National Simultaneous Storytime (NSS) is held annually by the Australian Library and Information Association. Every year a picture book, written and illustrated by an Australian author and illustrator, is read simultaneously in all libraries, schools, pre-schools, family homes and many other places around the country. This exciting event aims to promote the value of reading and literacy and promote the value and fun of books.
This year the book that has been selected for National Simultaneous Storytime is The Bowerbird Blues by Aura Parker. This book is also a CBCA shortlisted book in the Picture Book category.
Book Fair
Reading is the most critical skill as it is the foundation for all other learning. It needs to be practised, developed and refined. With a diverse range of fun, exciting books, the Book Fair has something for everyone.
This year our Book Fair will open in the Library on Wednesday, 5th June.
During class time the children will have an opportunity to visit the library and view the books on sale. They will complete a wish-list to bring home. If you would like to purchase any books from your child’s wish-list or visit the Book Fair yourself, it will be open before school (8am) and after school (until 4pm) from Wednesday, 5th June – Wednesday 12th June.
An option to purchase on-line will also be available.
Further information will come home closer to date.
We are looking forward to this exciting event that engages children and promotes literacy.
