Connecting Well Being and Deep Learning
Last week, we shared in Wellness Week at Guardian Angels. A week that invites us to take time to integrate well being practices as part of our regular routines, as we seek to balance our physical, emotional and spiritual selves. Importantly, the inclusion of well being practices within regular routines, supports the expression of emotions and attitudes. This supports the development of positive relationships, that encourage and motivate us in many areas of our life, and that supports us to engage with our community.
For our students, well being practices encourage connection with family, peers and staff that have a positive impact on learning.
Well being and deep learning share a deep connection, with the impact of well being on our capacity to learn with positivity and resilience; being fundamental in supporting deep learning.
The students celebrated their shared success to ‘LIVE the GA Way’ at assembly yesterday, with this framework providing a wonderful foundation to support learning, relationships and wellbeing.
Supporting Staff Wellbeing at Guardian Angels’ School
The health, safety and wellbeing of our employees is paramount, and Brisbane Catholic Education are taking proactive steps as part of our Health, Safety and Wellbeing Strategy and Employee Wellbeing Framework, to create a workplace that is safe and promotes the wellbeing of our Guardian Angels’ staff.
Aligned with this commitment and in accordance with our Schools’ Enterprise Agreement, I am writing to share with you the protocols that we have established in consultation with our staff on their right to disconnect.
Staff of Guardian Angels’ School, Wynnum, have the right to disconnect from work and not respond to, or engage with, work related communications including emails, texts, telephone calls, messages, video calls or other messages outside of the hours of 6am to 6pm on weekdays, Monday to Friday, or outside of rostered workdays for part time employees.
Guardian Angels’ School Staff can be required to connect and/or respond outside of the designated span of hours, for:
- public emergencies;
- critical incidents;
- receiving information about expectations for the start of school terms or return from leave;
- where potential harm to others may otherwise result; or
- where it may be necessary to comply with legal obligations.
For further information, please read the Employee Right to Disconnect Protocols via the Parent Portal (Documents).
I greatly appreciate your support of the wellbeing of our staff and ask that you please be mindful of these protocols when engaging with staff at Guardian Angels’ School outside of the designated hours.
Brisbane Catholic Education: Code of Conduct for Parents and Visitors to our Community
As a parent or visitor, we encourage you to be a part of the school community. We know that children’s learning and wellbeing outcomes improve through the active and supportive role of their parents, carers and families and we want you to enjoy being a partner in your child’s schooling journey.
The BCE Code of Conduct applies to all parents and visitors who interact within Brisbane Catholic Education workplaces, and is inclusive of physical, verbal and online interactions.
We all play a part in creating learning and working environments where people feel safe and respected.
Thank you for acting in accordance with the Code of Conduct through:
- Respect: We engage in respectful communication and actions, valuing the rights of others
- Collaboration: We promote partnership in your child’s schooling journey
- Care: We care for our people and learning and working environments.
The Code of Conduct for Parents and Visitors can be reviewed further in the newsletter and is available via the school’s public website and parent portal.
MC Playground Reimagining Project: Update
The playground project is progressing, and we are on track to be back in our revitalised area by the end of Term 2. The students have been watching the construction with great excitement. We can now see the playground climbing frames and slides, and the landscaping along Chestnut St and Bay Terrace taking shape. Included further in the newsletter are some recent images of the playground construction, and the original concept of the project.
A magical transformation is coming to life!

Reconciliation Week
This week is Reconciliation Week. National Reconciliation Week is a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures, and achievements, and to explore how each of us can contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia. The dates for National Reconciliation Week remain the same each year; 27 May to 3 June. These dates commemorate two significant milestones in the reconciliation journey— the successful 1967 referendum, and the High Court Mabo decision respectively. This journey requires all of us to walk together with courage as we take a crucial step towards a unified future, in which we understand, value and respect each other. This National Reconciliation Week, we invite Australians from all backgrounds to contribute to our national movement towards a unified future. As a school community, we will acknowledge this week with class prayer reflections and we will create a Sea of Hands to represent our community standing in solidarity with and in support of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
World Environment Day
Wednesday the 5th June is World Environment Day. It was initiated by the United Nations as a way of highlighting and active participation in the protection of our environment. St Francis of Assisi was an advocate for our environment and sustainability. We encourage everyone to follow in the footsteps of St Francis and ask “what can I do to protect the environment?”
We pray for your wisdom, Creator God, to safeguard the earth, its soil and all that grows in it.
We pray for your understanding, to cleanse the air and all that breathes.
We pray for your knowledge, to find ways to preserve our waters and all that live in them.
We pray for your guidance, to protect all living beings with whom we share our planet.
We pray for your compassion, to reach out to all those affected by extremes of weather, changes in climate, and the degradation of the environment.
Each class has been gifted a plant to care for until GA Day. This was an initiative of our Year 6 Stewardship Committee. They raised funds by having a ‘Green Day’ and used the funds to purchase a plant for each class. On GA day we will create a ‘Peace Garden’ to showcase our Franciscan charism and answer God’s call to be caretakers of creation.
A message from our students
Our Year 5/6 students have been learning to write a TEEL paragraph and three students have shared an amazing paragraph.
Guardian Angels is a Catholic Primary school in Brisbane. It is co-ed school with 530 students, from prep to grade six, learning each day. Teachers and staff members always make sure your happy and not being bullied. Subjects at Guardian Angels are Maths, English, Religion, Science, Music, Drama and Sport. GA provides many sporting opportunities, for example, running, netball, sport aerobics, shot-put, high jump and long jump. The school gives great play equipment and food! We love the tuckshop! They keep us safe and do practice drills, so we know what to do in fires/lockdowns. GA is a positive, happy and supportive environment and an awesome place to learn!

NCCD
Every year, all schools in Australia participate in the Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on School Students with Disability (NCC). The NCCD process required schools to identify information already available in the school about supports provided to students with disability. These relate to legislative requirements under the Disability Discrimination Act 1992 and the Disability Standards for Education 2005, in line with the NCCD guidelines (2019).
Information provided about students to the Australian Government for the NCCD includes:
- Year of schooling
- Category of disability: physical, cognitive, sensory or social-emotional
- Level of adjustment provided: support provided within quality differentiated teaching practice, supplementary, substantial or extensive.
The information assists schools to:
- Formally recognise the supports and adjustments provided to students with disability in schools
- Consider how they can strengthen the support of students with disability in schools
- Develop shared practices so that they can review their learning programs in order to improve educational outcomes for students with disability.
The NCCD provides state and federal governments with the information they need to plan more broadly for the support of students with disability.
The NCCD will have no direct impact on your child and your child will not be involved in any testing process. The school will provide data to the Australian Government in such a way that no individual student will be able to be identified – the privacy and confidentiality of all students is ensured. All information is protected by privacy laws that regulate the collection, storage and disclosure of personal information. To find out more about these matters, please refer to the Australian Government’s Privacy Policy (https://www.education.gov.au/privacy-policy).
Further information about the NCCD can be found on the NCCD Portal (https://www.nccd.edu.au).
If you have any questions about the NCCD, please contact the Guardian Angels’ Inclusion Team (Renae Haggitt- Guidance Counsellor, Stephanie Sims- Support Teacher: Inclusive Education, Jayne Murphy- Support Teacher: Inclusive Education).
