Guardian Angels' Update - Term 2 | Week 10
Term 2 Week 10 - School News
As we prepare to bring a very busy Term 2 to a close tomorrow, I can’t think of any better way than with the events and activities that reflect the strengths of our learning and faith community. Over the past week, it has been heart-warming to see our students, parents and staff having the opportunity to participate and share in such experiences.
Our Prep – Year 6 Athletics Carnival was one of these events, with all students having the opportunity to engage in a variety of activities. The leadership of our House Captains and Student Leaders was outstanding in creating team spirit for each house, with a focus on participation and sportsmanship. Thanks to Melanie Denmead (PE Specialist Teacher) for all her efforts in coordinating our first P-6 carnival. Thanks also to our staff, parent volunteers and spectators, and students for making this a great day. We look forward to sharing in the overall carnival winners and age champions at our Week 1 Assembly next term.
On Wednesday evening, we celebrated the Sacrament of Confirmation with many children from our Guardian Angels’ community. This is an important time in the faith life of our children, and we pray for those who received the sacrament, and for their families and teachers who supported their journey.
Pope Francis inspires us to remember the times that we received the sacraments, and to take time for prayer and reflection to enliven our faith. His catechesis on Confirmation is a beautiful reminder of the effects of the sacrament. Pope Francis outlines that the gift of the Spirit fosters a sense of unity, as we are called to share in the mission of the Church. The ‘sign of peace’ shared during the Confirmation ceremony, symbolises to us that as confirmed Catholics, we are called to work for peace in our communities.
Finally, Pope Francis challenges us to remember that receiving the gift of the Holy Spirit at Confirmation enables us to become a gift for others. As our children receive the Sacrament, it is important to think of the gifts of the Spirit as they apply in our lives. Below is an outline of each of the gifts of the Spirit, and how we can encourage and facilitate an awareness of these in our children:
Wisdom: The ability to see God in everyone and everything everywhere.
Understanding: The ability to comprehend that we are followers of Christ.
Right Judgment: The ability to know right from wrong and to choose to do what is right.
Reverence: The ability to have deep respect for God and the church.
Knowledge: The ability to understand the meaning of God.
Courage: The ability to overcome our fear and to stand up for what is right in the eyes of God.
Wonder and Awe: The ability to be aware the God is all-powerful, all-loving, all-perfect.

In other news...
Drop off and pick up zone volunteers
Thank you to those parents who have already so generously volunteered their time in the pick up zones. We truly appreciate your help.
We would love parent helpers at both campuses in Term 3. Pick up zones operate from 8:00am – 8:25am in the morning and from 2:55pm – 3:20pm in the afternoons. It's an easy 25 mins, opening car doors, helping little people in and out of cars.
If you can spare 20-30 minutes once or twice a week please email Jenny Druce at jdruce@bne.catholic.edu.au with your preferred day, time and campus.
If I have nominated you for a shift, and it’s not suitable, please let me know.
A friendly reminder, before commencing your role as a volunteer or other personnel at our school, you are required to complete the online volunteer training. The training can be found here: https://www.bne.catholic.edu.au/students-parents/student-protection/Pages/Student-Protection-and-Code-of-Conduct-Training-for-Volunteers-and-Other-Personnel.aspx
You will need to download, print and complete your registration form, which is contained within your online training. Return it to the School Office prior to commencing your role.
Second-hand Uniform Shop
The second hand uniform shop will be open on the first Monday of the month with the next open day on Monday 11 July (first day of Term 3).
The shop will open between 7:30am and 8:10am on the GA campus. Each item is $5. Cash only sales.
A friendly reminder regarding the process for purchasing from the second hand shop:
- only parent volunteers, managing the second hand sales, are allowed in the storeroom
- second hand items are washed and bagged according to size so that finding stock is quick and easy
- due to the demand in short opening hours please take the item as given to you by our parent volunteers. It is not possible to sift through stock; if it is unsuitable it can be returned to the Mount Carmel School Office for a refund or exchange
- the shop has a small float on the day but the exact change is appreciated.
Demand for second hand uniform items is usually high so our parent volunteers truly appreciate your kindness and patience as they help as many parents as possible when the shop is open.
Random Acts of Kindness
According to the Random Acts of Kindness Foundation (https://www.randomactsofkindness.org/) there are six core kindness concepts: Respect, Caring, Inclusiveness, Integrity, Responsibility and Courage.
Responsibility
At Guardian Angels' we show responsibility by being ready to learn and staying on task in the classroom; responding promptly to the bell; demonstrating self-discipline at assemblies and liturgies; listening to instructions and acting safely in pick up zones. Check out the responsibilty challenge below for something to do in the school holidays.
Courage
Demonstrating courage doesn't always mean big bold acts like wrestling with a crocodile, abseiling or rockclimbing. Although our Year 5 and 6 students showed bucket loads of courage on camp recently taking part in these risk-taking activities (the abseiling and rockclimbing, not the crocodiles!), courage can also be demonstrated simply by raising a hand in class to ask a question, standing in front of the class to give a speech or sticking up for a friend in need.
School Holiday Responsiblity Challenge!
Challenge yourself, your family and friends to complete this list every day before using electronics.
Track your progress from 25 June to 10 July (14 days) and see how many days you can go!
Here are the items to complete each day:
- clean your room
- read for 20 minutes
- spend an hour in nature
- do an act of kindness for someone (see 50 ways to be kind below for ideas)
- spend 20 minutes doing your favorite activity
- sit and colour without distractions for 30 minutes
Self-Care:
- brush teeth
- brush hair
- eat breakfast
- get dressed
- drink 1L of water

The Catholic Church professes marriage and family life to be a path to holiness -- a daunting concept -- but one that can start with a tiny step, Pope Francis said.
"Start from where you are, and, from there, try to journey together: together as couples, together in your families, together with other families, together with the Church"
