Pupil Free Day
Student Free Day
Every year in Term Three, schools throughout the Brisbane Catholic Education diocese have a Professional Development Day which is a STUDENT FREE DAY. We use this as a valuable professional opportunity to work together to strengthen teaching and learning practices throughout our school.
This student free day generally falls on the Friday of Week 8 in Term Three each year.
This year, the STUDENT FREE DAY is FRIDAY 30 AUGUST (Week 8).
Schools will not be open for students on this day so please ensure arrangements have been made to support your family. Those families associated with OSHC and who may require student care for Friday 30 August, please contact OSHC directly to make those arrangements.
From the Principal
With a father’s heart: that is how Joseph loved Jesus,
whom all four Gospels refer to as ‘the son of Joseph.’”
This Sunday is Father’s Day, when we recognise the profound influence fathers,
grandfathers and father figures have in our lives.
Pope Francis holds up the inspiring model of St. Joseph, patron saint of fathers, workers,
and the universal Church, to all fathers. Pope Francis reminds us of St Joseph’s humility, selflessness, courage and love that he showed to Mary and Jesus.
He also emphasises that Joseph was a working father and shared the beautiful reflection below:
May you be for them as St Joseph was: guardians of their growth in age, wisdom and grace.
May you guard them on their journey: be educators and walk with them.
Thank you for all you do for your children: thank you.
May St Joseph bless you and accompany you. (Pope Francis)
Many blessings for a wonderful Father’s Day this Sunday.
May the day bring love, laughter and all God’s blessings.
From the Primary Learning Leader
Dear Parents and care givers,
On Tuesday 10th September from 8:30am – 9:15am we welcome parents and care givers into our classrooms to showcase the wonderful work that has been taking place this term. This is a great opportunity for our parents to come into our learning spaces and connect with the children’s learning.
From the Guidance Counsellor
National Child Protection Week occurs between the 1st – 7th September 2024. In 2024, the National Child Protection Week message that 'Every Child in Every Community Needs a Fair Go' will be complemented with the theme ‘Every Conversation Matters’. This message captures the essence of National Child Protection Week which aims to promote a safe and supported life for every child, now and into the future.
National Child Protection Week reminds us that child protection is everyone’s responsibility. The theme ‘Every Conversation Matters’ helps us to explore and talk about the many ways that conversations matter for children, young people and their families. Conversations can help us understand issues, explore solutions, value community knowledge, and build social connections of children and young people. This theme provides a platform to:
- Engage in important conversations,
- Promote the value of conversations, and
- Equip us to have conversations that keep children safe.
At Guardian Angels’, ‘LIVING the GA Way’ reminds us about making positive choices to engage responsibly and act safely with others. This approach means working together to solve problems in a way that enables a sense of strong community connections. We can all work together in ensuring that our children feel nurtured and safe to reach their full potential. Conversations play an important step in supporting our children’s safety and wellbeing. By starting a new conversation, we can explore and talk about the many ways that conversations matter for children, young people and their families.
The National Association for the Protection of Child Abuse and Neglect NAPCAN provides wonderful resources for families and schools. This website has produced a range of resources and activities for families to support conversations with your children about what makes them feel safe and supported in their community: NAPCAN Resources and Activity Sheets.
This National Child Protection Week we invite you to speak up and speak together about what needs to change for every child in every community to have a fair go. We look forward to supporting this important initiative with you.
For any further information or if you have any concerns, please contact one of our Student Protection Contacts listed on our Guardian Angels’ website here.
Dear Prep, Year 1, and Year 2 Parents and Carers,
During Week 9, our Bravehearts’ personal safety education program will be returning to school on the 4th September and running the ‘Ditto’s Keep Safe Adventure Show’ for Prep, Year 1, and Year 2 students. The show has been updated and re-aligned to the Australian Curriculum and now includes two different shows, one for Prep students and one for Years 1 - 2 students.
The Ditto show is a live, interactive 40-minute performance starring Bravehearts’ mascot ‘Ditto’. The Ditto show teaches young children essential personal safety skills and knowledge using age-appropriate language, song, and dance. It provides students with personal safety tools and strategies while supporting positive self-esteem and resilience-building.
What your child will learn:
The show is underpinned by the following principles of personal safety:
- Differentiating safe and unsafe feelings.
- Recognising the bodies warning signs.
- Body ownership and that it is ok to say no.
- Helping children name public and private parts using anatomically correct names.
- Reinforcing that there is no secret that children cannot tell someone.
- What to do if you feel unsafe or unsure.
Your child will learn these essential principles through a behaviour approach to content delivery, interactive games, and age-appropriate songs. They will also learn ‘Ditto’s 3 Rules’, which are:
- We all have the right to feel safe with people.
- It’s ok to say NO if you feel unsafe or unsure.
- Nothing is so yucky that you can’t tell someone about it.
As part of the program, children are each given a Ditto’s Keep Safe Adventure Activity Booklet to take home. We encourage you to look at the booklet with your child, using the activities to help cement the personal safety messages from the show. If you would like to learn more about how to talk to your child about personal safety, please look at the parent and carers resources from the Bravehearts website: Ditto's Keep Safe Adventure Program. If you have any queries about the Ditto Show or would like any further information, please do not hesitate to contact the school or Guidance Counsellor.
Renae Haggitt – Guidance Counsellor.
